Weld RE-9 School District hires Andy Lavier as superintendent, effective July 1

The Weld RE-9 School District’s Board of Education has selected Andy Lavier as the next superintendent, according to a March 11 announcement from the board.

Starting July 1, Lavier will replace interim superintendent Karen Trusler, who temporarily took over when the board voted unanimously in December to fire former superintendent Troy Damman. Damman served only five months in the role.

“At this time, we’d like to give a huge thank you to Karen Trusler for stepping in as interim superintendent, helping us finish the year strong and for her guidance and expertise throughout this process,” the board said in the announcement. “Her leadership has been invaluable, and we’re so grateful for her support.”

The board also extended its gratitude to Dr. Zila of McPherson & Jacobsen, LLC, for helping the school district through the superintendent search process.

On March 10, the Weld RE-9 School District hosted a meet-and-greet with the four superintendent finalists —  Lavier, Kyle Bules, Scott Cooper and Jim Fraley. The board, alongside staff and community members, interviewed the candidates on March 11 before reaching a final decision at a special board meeting.

Lavier has nearly 30 years of experience in education, serving as a leader dedicated to student success, school safety and expanding Career and Technical Education opportunities, according to his bio on the Weld RE-9 website.

In his most recent role as the assistant superintendent of the Center Consolidated School District in Center, Colorado, he played a part in staff recruitment and retention, budget development, school security, strategic planning to support student success beyond graduation and overseeing Title IX compliance.

Before his district-level leadership role, he served as the principal of Alamosa High School for a decade, his bio said.

His leadership led the school to earn “performance” ratings from the Colorado Department of Education, secure funding for construction projects to enhance facilities and double participation in agricultural and automotive education programs, according to the bio. His strong partnerships with local colleges and universities also increased concurrent enrollment opportunities and guided over 10% of graduates to earn an associate degree.

He also taught high school social studies for 17 years and coached youth, middle and high school sports.

Lavier will officially step into the role July 1 but has been in ongoing contact. He has meetings scheduled with the board and staff before then, board president Brian Fabrizius said in an email Monday.

“We’re thrilled to have Mr. Lavier join the Weld RE-9 family and can’t wait to see the great things we’ll accomplish together,” the announcement said.
