    User Experience

    One of my biggest pet peeves with flash drives is the packaging. They are almost always trapped in an impossible-to-open pneumatic package. It was refreshing to find that the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive came in a box that was frustration-free. The inside package encloses the flash drive with a simple plastic covering. There is a sticker on the inner package that provides the user with a 1-year license for RescuePRO Deluxe (subscription pricing starts at $39.99).

    The SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive is a bit larger than other flash drives I’ve used recently. The SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO for example only weighs 0.64 ounces, which is almost half the weight of the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive. The case of the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive is metal, which contributes to the weight and it’s not so heavy that it’s cumbersome to carry in a pocket. It’s just noticeable compared to other flash drives.

    I love that the flash drive is compatible with two different i/o types. I primarily use a MacBook Pro, but I also work with several other systems, so having a USB-A plug on the flash drive is very helpful. The interface is USB 3.2 Gen 2, regardless of which side you use. I opted to plug the flash drive directly into my MacBook Pro for testing purposes so that I had the most direct connection to the host device without having to use an adapter or hub. This means that I used the USB-C end for testing.

    Testing

    When I test data storage devices for speed I run four different tests — Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, AJA Speed Test Lite, AmorphousDiskMark, and a real-time drag-and-drop test — to assess how well a device measures up against its specs. Here is the breakdown of the test results for the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive.

    Blackmagic Disk Speed Test

    Blackmagic Disk Speed Test is a free benchmarking tool designed to measure the performance of your storage drives. Developed by Blackmagic Design, it is widely used by professionals to test the read and write speeds of SSDs, external drives, and other storage devices. The tool simulates real-world workloads, particularly those required for video editing, ensuring your drive can handle high-resolution formats such as 4K and 8K.

    I ran this test as a 1GB stress test. These were the results.

    AJA Speed Test Lite is a free disk benchmarking tool from AJA Video Systems, designed to measure storage performance with customizable options for file size, resolution, and codec selection. Unlike Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, which focuses on standardized video workflows, AJA Speed Test Lite offers greater flexibility in testing various storage types and provides more detailed results. While both tools measure read and write speeds in real-time, AJA Speed Test Lite is ideal for users needing a broader assessment of storage performance, whereas Blackmagic’s tool is streamlined for video post-production needs.

    I set the test to run with the following perimeters and got the results in the table below.

    AmorphousDiskMark

    AmorphousDiskMark is a disk benchmarking tool for macOS, designed to measure the read and write speeds of storage devices such as SSDs, HDDs, and external drives. Inspired by the popular CrystalDiskMark for Windows, it provides sequential and random performance tests to evaluate a drive’s real-world efficiency. The tool is useful for assessing storage performance across different workloads, from large file transfers to small, frequent read/write operations.

    The test results are shown in the screenshot below.

    Real-Time Drag-and-Drop Test

    I perform a real-world test by manually transferring a large folder with mixed file types and sizes to and from the drive while timing the process. This offers a practical measure of the drive’s performance under actual usage conditions, rather than relying solely on synthetic benchmarks.

    Using my iPhone’s stopwatch, I timed the transfer of a 3.9GB folder to the selected hard drive. The process took 1:02.44 minutes, providing a clear indicator of the drive’s real-world speed.

    What does all this mean?

    The published specifications claim sequential read speeds of 1000MB/s and write speeds of 900MB/s, and the tests largely confirm these figures under optimal conditions. In Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, the drive achieved an unusually high 1575.3MB/s read speed, likely due to caching or testing on an internal SSD rather than the USB drive, while the 882.2MB/s write speed closely aligns with the advertised spec. (NOTE: I did repeat the test and still saw higher than advertised Write speeds.)

    The AJA Speed Test Lite results, tested with 4K ProRes HQ files, reported 736MB/s read and 858MB/s write, slightly lower than the published specs but still indicating solid real-world performance. AmorphousDiskMark produced 977.69MB/s read and 970.96MB/s write (QD8), which is very close to the advertised speeds, and slightly exceeded the rated write performance. The QD1 sequential speeds (754MB/s read, 790MB/s write) indicate that the drive benefits from higher queue depths, typical for SSD-based storage.

    However, the real-world file transfer test (copying a 3.9GB folder) resulted in a significantly lower 62.5MB/s transfer rate, highlighting potential bottlenecks. This gap between synthetic benchmarks and actual usage could be attributed to several factors, including USB port limitations (not using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port), file system and file type impact (transferring mixed files vs. a single large file), thermal throttling, or OS-level overhead affecting performance. Additionally, the 4K random read/write speeds from AmorphousDiskMark (175.32MB/s read, 36.21MB/s write at QD64) suggest that while the drive handles small file reads decently, random write performance is much slower (9.58MB/s at QD1), which could impact certain workloads.

    Overall, the tests confirm that the SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive can achieve near-advertised speeds in synthetic benchmarks, but real-world performance may vary due to external factors. Ensuring the drive is connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port, testing with a single large file, and monitoring for thermal throttling could help improve real-world results.

    Conclusion

    The SanDisk Extreme PRO Dual Drive delivers on its promise of high-speed, reliable file transfers and backup capabilities, making it a solid choice for professionals and power users.
