Frank Lampard tipped to manage England in ultimate compliment from rival EFL boss

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was full of praise for Coventry City manager Frank Lampard – who is enjoying a great run of form with his side in the Midlands.

Wilder even went as far to say that the former Chelsea star could ‘easily manage England’ in a press conference bursting with praise for the 46-year-old.

Lampard has turned Coventry’s season around from starting with them in 17th place

Speaking before his side’s clash with Coventry on Friday, Wilder said: “I’ve got an enormous amount of respect for Frank Lampard.

“His playing career is there for everybody to see but I just love the fact that he just loves football.

“It just shines through that he does whatever job he takes. He took a tough job at Derby and got them through to the play-off final.

“We had a couple of great games with them in that season and they had an outstanding run at it. Tough gig at Chelsea when they didn’t sign any players, and he had to play a lot of the young players.

“Tough gig at Everton. I don’t think he gets the credit which he deserves.

“When people talk about England managers and people are critical of him, I just don’t get it. He can quite easily manage England in my opinion.

“The job he is doing at Coventry, he didn’t have to do it, but he wanted to get his hands dirty.

“He loves football, he loves the changing room, everything about football so I am a big fan.”

Since Lampard took over in November, Coventry have risen from 17th to 5th in the Championship table and are now play-off contenders.

The former England star had big boots to fill too, taking over from Mark Robins who was the longest-serving boss in the EFL.

Lampard has also brought the Sky Blues their best league run for 55 years in terms of points accumulated over a nine-game period.

The side have only lost six games since Lampard’s first game on November 30th and he will look to continue that momentum should the club secure a play-off spot.

Coventry’s path since suffering Premier League relegation in 2001 has seen them battle through all three tiers of the English Football League.

Their top-flight hiatus seemed within touching distance of coming to an end in 2023 but they fell to a defeat in their Championship play-off final against Luton Town.

But Lampard has now restored belief in the players and supporters. With five wins from their last six away games, Coventry travel to Sheffield United full of confidence.

“As a footballer, you want to learn your trade from the very best and I don’t think there’s many better to learn from than the gaffer.

“I’ve only been here a short period of time but what I can say is since I’ve been here he’s been an absolute pleasure to work with.

“With the level of detail every day on the training pitch you’re so engaged because you want to learn from top players and top managers like him.”

Sheffield United are second in the Championship, whilst Coventry are fifth – with both sides looking to boost their play-off hopes.

Coverage of the second-tier clash is live on talkSPORT 2 at 8pm on Friday night!
