The family of Tejano singing sensation Selena Quintanilla-Perez is praising the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles after it denied parole for her killer, Yolanda Saldívar, on Thursday, March 27.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles announced in a press release that after “thorough consideration” a three-person panel decided that Saldívar shouldn’t be granted parole considering the nature of her offense. She was convicted of murder with a deadly weapon in 1995.
Saldívar, the former president of the Selena fan club and a manager of Selena's clothing boutiques, fatally shot the singer on March 31, 1995, just weeks before her 24th birthday. Selena had hoped to clear up reports that Saldívar was embezzling money from the singer’s stores.
“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon,” Selena’s family said via a post on her official Instagram account.
Following her death, EMI Latin put together a compilation of her recordings titled Dreaming of You that went on to top the Billboard 200 in August 1995. At the time, it made her only the fourth act of primarily Hispanic descent to top the album chart, following Santana, Los Lobos, and Cypress Hill.
Jennifer Lopez famously portrayed the singer in the 1997 biopic Selena in what’s considered the breakout role that made her a star.
