Hugh Jackman’s Sutton Foster romance should cost him in divorce, wife says

Nearly two years after announcing their supposedly amicable split, Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are reportedly nowhere near to even filing for divorce following revelations that he had been involved in a romance with his Broadway co-star Sutton Foster — a relationship that supposedly was an “open secret” to everyone but Furness.

The Daily Mail reported Thursday that Jackman, 56, and Furness, 69, have hit an “impasse” over their divorce because Furness believes she is “entitled” to more money than Jackman is willing to fork over.

In January, Jackman and Furness reportedly were weeks away from filing for divorce — after 27 years of what seemed to be one of the few happy, enduring Hollywood marriages. But a source told the Daily Mail that Furness has come to believe that she’s owed a bigger chunk of their estimated $250 million fortune, in part, because of his romance with Foster.

So, the Daily Mail said it’s “murky” whether things got physical between the Australian actor and Foster, 50, before he and Furness announced their separation in September 2023. Other reports have alleged there was a backstage affair.

For the Daily Mail’s report Thursday, the source said: “While he didn’t physically cheat on her with Sutton, Deborra-Lee believes they were having an emotional affair and she feels he betrayed her.”

Something was certainly was going on between Jackman and Foster when they co-starred together in the Broadway revival of “The Music Man.” The show ran from 2021 to January 2023, and Foster herself admitted that she and Jackman developed a close bond during the production — while they were married to other people.

In the classic musical, they played characters who fall in love and sing famous love ballads to each another. Foster starred as Marian the Librarian, who falls for the charms of Jackman’s conman Harold Hill. In an 2022 interview, the Tony Award winner said she and Jackman enjoyed a pre-performance ritual that included alone-time in her dressing room.

“We call it carpet chat,” Foster revealed during an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” She said they became “really good friends” and would ” just talk and catch up on our day.”

Foster also was said to be “absolutely giddy” around Jackman during the production, while he was “besotted with Sutton from the moment he met her,” according to an InTouch Weekly source. “He followed her around like a puppy!”

Furness reportedly had her “suspicions” about her husband working with Foster, the effervescent actor/singer/dancer who had starred in TV Land’s hit comedy series, “Younger” — playing a woman in her 40s who easily passes for a 26-year-old book publishing assistant.

Nine months after “The Music Man” closed, Furness and Jackman announced their separation, The couple, who first met working together in Australian TV and share two children, 24 and 19, spun the separation as a mutual decision based on  “gratitude, love and kindness” and a desire “to pursue our individual growth.”

In October, the New York City tabloids began publishing stories about Jackman’s relationship with Foster, largely spurred by news that she had filed for divorce from screenwriter Ted Griffin after 10 years of marriage.

While Furness has never directly addressed her split from Jackman, Us Weekly reported in October that she appeared to confirm a gossip blogger’s social media post that said she was “blindsided” by news of his relationship with Foster. This Us Weekly report also put the blame for the couple’s divorce on his backstage relationship with Foster.

“Sutton and Hugh’s relationship is the reason that Hugh and Deb got divorced,” a source close to Foster told Us Weekly In October.

This source also insisted that Jackman began dating Foster before he and Furness separated.

“A lot of people on Broadway knew, and we kept it quiet because both of them are so nice and great people,” the source said. “Everyone respected their privacy. But there was an affair and overlap.”

Whether or not Furness can prove the “overlap,” she is said to be using her estranged husband’s relationship with his co-star to get what she believes she deserves financially, the Daily Mail reported.

“With a significant amount of money at stake, Debora-Lee is determined to get what she believes she deserves from the separation,” a source told the Daily Mail. “She is using the fact that Hugh is still married and involved with another woman against him.”
