I believe every word N.C. State’s new basketball coach says.
Will Wade, who became the latest Wolfpack coach Tuesday, had the audience at Reynolds Coliseum and eventually across the state by social media eating out of his hand.
Wade is a 42-year-old veteran with a baby face and obvious gift for gab, which helped him do well everywhere he has coached. He began by thanking State’s chancellor and Athletic Director Boo Corrigan, who has generations of college knowledge from his father, Gene, the former athletic director at Virginia and Notre Dame and ACC Commissioner.
Wade said, “Boo was just phenomenal throughout the process.” That’s hoops talk for he gave me the money I need to do the job here. So when Wade guaranteed State fans his team would be in the “upper half of the ACC and make the NCAA tournament next year,” he knows what he can do with what State has given him to work with.
Isn’t it clear that with few Cinderellas advancing and schools with the biggest budgets all fighting it out for the Final Four that money talks way more in power sports these days? Further, how many big-time college teams have turned it around in short order in far less time than building a program takes?
It’s doubtful that State can reach Duke’s level, but who’s to say that isn’t Wade’s blue-sky goal. But Carolina? By now, he knows that beating the Tar Heels is critical for his school, which has dominated in football lately but been beaten badly in basketball over the last 25 years.
With Elliot Cadeau and Jalen Washington entering the portal, Hubert Davis and Jim Turner are already under the gun to buy and pay a roster that may not make the biggest headlines but will become the best team possible on court. And that includes going to Europe if so.
Cadeau leaving has been speculated for much of his sometimes-spectacular sophomore season when he was also foul and turnover prone. The 6-10 JWash has not developed as much as hoped, but the long-armed athlete will surely be offered big money from schools seeking his size.
So, Tar Heel Nation, State’s three-decade stumble through head coaches is over. And John Rothstein of CBS who roasted the NCAA selection committee for inviting UNC to the Dance, agrees that his good friend will knock it out of the park, as Wade said “being the best version of myself.”
This puts even more pressure on Carolina not to fall into third among Triangle teams. Wade acknowledged his trouble when fired by LSU and thanked McNeese State for giving him another chance. And he promised he would take his best shot immediately.
“Our time is right now,” he said. “This isn’t a rebuild. Everybody’s on the same accord, singing from the same song sheet. It’s going to be a reckoning for the ACC and college basketball. And it’s coming soon.”
