University of Northern Colorado outfielder Nya Chacon, a graduate student from Loveland, was named the Big Sky Conference co-player of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Chacon was 7 of 13 at the plate for a .538 batting average in four games March 22-23 against Santa Clara. Chacon had three extra-base hits for seven RBI, she had a .600 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage. Chacon recorded 12 putouts with no errors on defense.
Chacon shared the conference weekly honor with Idaho State outfielder Gracie Smith. The award is Chacon’s first Big Sky Conference award this season. She was named Big Sky Conference player of the week once in 2024. Smith was honored for the second time.
Chacon is hitting .274 in 25 games (20 of 73) with 13 RBI and three home runs this season. She hit a home in the first game Saturday against Santa Clara. Chacon has a .354 on-base percentage and a .438 slugging percentage this season.
Northern Colorado split the four-game series with Santa Clara, which was UNC’s final nonconference series of the season.
UNC (9-21)begins Big Sky Conference play Friday against Montana at Gloria Rodriguez Field. The Bears host the Grizzlies for three games, at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday.
UNC is the defending regular-season Big Sky Conference champion and two-time defending conference tournament champion. The Bears will host the Big Sky Conference Tournament May 6-9 at Rodriguez Field by winning the regular-season title last year.
