AUSTINTOWN — Walking into the doors of Americon Restoration on a late February morning, hundreds of boxes were neatly stacked, giving the feeling that someone was moving.
That was the case, but it wasn’t why the boxes were meticulously organized, filling up nearly every inch of the front room.
Every box was filled with clients’ belongings, carefully categorized.
It just happened that a few short months before, the local business purchased its space at 3645 Mahoning Ave.
And they’re already bursting at the seams.
Americon Restoration is a 100-plus-year-old restoration business run by business partners and lifelong friends Yianni Coutris and Kirk Nikolaides.
Coutris’ grandfather, John, an immigrant from Greece, started the business.
In 2019, Coutris and Nikolaides teamed up after receiving a blessing from then-owner and Coutris’ dad, Angelo, to take Americon Restoration to new heights, Coutris said.
Nikolaides, an “accomplished” contractor, and Coutris, who is business-minded and can sift through claims, say they make a great team.
HOW IT WORKS
The Americon Restoration team is called by a homeowner or business owner about a significant event, like an act of God, Coutris said.
Employees take the dirty belongings from the flooded or burned area, take them to their facility and organize them.
They then clean and disinfect the inventory, repackage everything and store it in their building until the home or business is cleaned and repaired.
But as Coutris and Nikolaides explained, there’s much more than cleaning that goes into restoration.
“Sometimes the psychological part of these losses are a lot heavier to deal with … they’re harder to navigate,” Coutris said.
Then there’s the intimidating part — dealing with insurance.
“At the end of the day, we educate,” Coutris said.
That education includes outlining a timeline of when the client can anticipate paperwork and physical work being done, and everything sandwiched in between.
“There are different portions of a claim,” Coutris said. Sometimes there’s the emergency portion, or mitigation. Then there’s the triage, which is the initial response and assessment.
Also included is the structural reconstruction and the lost contents of tables, couches, clothing or anything that’s included on a list to be replaced.
Not to be forgotten is the cleaning contents portion, which is done at the Austintown location.
It doesn’t matter what the items are, they are categorized, packed and documented with care, Coutris and Nikolaides said.
SMALL AND MIGHTY
Several Americon Restoration locations service Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania, including Austintown, Lakewood and Pittsburgh.
Each spot has 20 employees.
There are larger competitors, Coutris said, but being a local, smaller business allows them to be flexible.
They can handle large projects, like at hospitals around patients or at businesses that have heavy equipment, to the more intimate settings where families may be displaced while work is done.
What sets Americon apart is employees’ listening skills, Coutris and Nikolaides agreed.
And that they are detail-oriented when taking care of clients, whether that’s lending a shoulder to cry on, helping people figure out their claims or ensuring that belongings are being cared for with respect.
PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST
Setting Americon Restoration apart is its approach to working with each client and it’s a faith-based company.
“We love people more than we love money,” Coutris said. “We want to help first and foremost.”
Coutris and Nikolaides — who are Greek Orthodox — shared that recently, a new homeowner reached out after purchasing a home. The house, which was a flip project, wasn’t done correctly and the new homeowner discovered issues after the big buy.
To make sure their client was safe, they paid for a hotel until insurance kicked in.
“The Americon way is, it’s the Americon family,” Coutris said. “For better or for worse, we’re going to be your family.”
Through the process of helping people back on their feet, Nikolaides said the work is fulfilling.
“It’s a rewarding job because if someone has a fire or flood … just to be able to help them through that tragic situation” makes the work worth it, he said.
The duo believe in what they do so much, they are sharing some advice with everyone.
“Work with your insurance agent to make sure you have coverage, and understand it,” Coutris said.
Building on that, Nikolaides said don’t just purchase insurance without talking with an agent.
“Know how much coverage you have,” he said.
In the event a home or business owner needs a restoration company, Coutris encourages going with the right restoration company “that’s going to meet your needs for the entire project.”
