TAMPA Bay Buccaneers star quarterback Baker Mayfield confirmed that he had marriage struggles with Emily Wilkinson.
Mayfield and Wilkinson got engaged after just six months of dating and got married in July 2019.
The two-time Pro Bowler Mayfield and Wilkinson also welcomed a baby girl, Kova Jade, last April.
Over the weekend, however, Baker opened up about his marital struggles during an appearance on the Sports Spectrum podcast.
“God taught me a lesson,” he opened about it with a five-word message.
Mayfield then said, “He had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize that I’m more than a football player.
“There’s much more going on than the game of football, and for me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom, and that was it.
“It wasn’t just football. It was in our marriage.”
Mayfield then shared that he and Emily had difficulties conceiving a child.
“We weren’t doing well at all. At this time, we were trying to have kids. Wasn’t going well,” the 29-year-old said.
“And so that was when we dove into PAO. But I remember a couple [of] years ago, we talked about… There’s that 99 percent of you… that you could put on the facade.
“As a guy you put on the mask. But behind closed doors, who are you really?
“What are you hiding? Are you being vulnerable?
“And until my career got stripped down, I was hiding a lot.”
During that time, Mayfield struggled on the NFL field.
Fortunately, Mayfield hit his stride with the Buccaneers in 2023 and that wasn’t the only big news.
In December of that year, the couple shared that they were expecting their first child.
Last offseason, Mayfield would sign a three-year contract extension with the Bucs worth up to $100 million with $50 million guaranteed.
He has helped Tampa Bay make the playoffs for the past two seasons.
Mayfield spoke about the fact that the couple has found the way back to the life that had always hoped.
“And then, for me to climb back up, I had to dive into word and accept the grace. And that was something that was really, really hard for me,” Mayfield said.
“And when I eventually did, IO started to see things from a different viewpoint.
“And that was the biggest change in my life.
“And that’s a couple of years ago.
“I think the best part that I’ve learned throughout the process is constant work.
