Diamondbacks crack The Athletic’s World Series, MLB awards predictions

Opening Day for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the majority of MLB is right around the corner.

So naturally, it’s prediction time for those end-of-season awards.

In The Athletic’s poll of 33 MLB writers, there was no shortage of Arizona Diamondbacks representation following an offseason of revamping.

Corbin Carroll, Corbin Burnes headline Diamondbacks vote-getters for MLB awards

Leading the way among individual vote-getters for the D-backs is new addition Corbin Burnes.

While he didn’t earn the Opening Day start, with Zac Gallen getting the nod instead, Burnes was the lone D-backs starter who earned votes for the NL Cy Young award with four.

He wasn’t, however, anywhere close to Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler (14) and Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes (12).

Atlanta’s Spencer Strider, Los Angeles Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow and Atlanta’s Chris Sale all received a vote.

Burnes is readying himself for Year 1 as a D-back after going 15-9 with a 2.92 ERA as a member of the Baltimore Orioles last season.

He’s expected to make his Diamondbacks debut on the team’s first road trip of the year against the New York Yankees.

Burnes wasn’t the only Corbin on the team to receive multiple votes in a respective category, either, with Corbin Carroll getting two NL MVP votes.

Carroll had an up-and-down 2024 that really came around in the backend of the season. His stretch in June was especially impressive behind 11 home runs, 24 RBIs, 10 walks and a 1.042 OPS.

Unsurprisingly, Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani leads the way in voting with 18. He’s followed by teammate Mookie Betts (five), New York’s Juan Soto (three), Chicago’s Kyle Tucker (two), Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz (two), Carroll (two) and New York’s Francisco Lindor (one).

Jordan Lawlar earns a ROY vote

Sure, he got optioned to Triple-A Reno ahead of Opening Day, but D-backs prospect Jordan Lawlar still managed to snag an NL Rookie of the Year vote.

MLB Pipeline’s 11th-ranked prospect, who The Athletic’s Jim Bowden believes could make a difference in the second half of the season, slashed .294/.368/.529 with five extra-base hits in 38 plate appearances in Cactus League play before being sent down.

The big thing for Lawlar is staying healthy, which wasn’t the case this past year.

“I think the history over the last year or so he was hurt for the majority of last year,” GM Mike Hazen told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta in February. “Obviously, he came up in 2023 and did a really good job for us at the end of the season and nothing has changed with regards to Jordan Lawlar. “When Jordan Lawlar is ready to be on this team, Jordan Lawlar’s gonna be on this team.”

Leading the way in the NL ROY voting was Los Angeles’ Roki Sasaki (15). He was followed by Washington’s Dylan Crews (nine), Chicago’s Matt Shaw (four), Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler (three), Lawlar (one) and Washington’s Robert Hassell (one).

Diamondbacks in the NL pennant, World Series discussion

On top of individual awards, The Athletic also got writers’ thoughts on pennant and World Series winners.

In both categories, the D-backs made an appearance with a pair of votes in each.

As for which team led the way in the two? The defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers, who received 16 NL pennant votes and 14 World Series nods.

The D-backs and Dodgers weren’t the only NL West team to make the voting, either, with the San Diego Padres earning a vote in both categories.
