Texas has moved quickly to replace head men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry.
The school officially parted ways with Terry earlier in the day on Sunday. Shortly thereafter, Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesman reported that Xavier’s Sean Miller will be hired to replace Terry.
Sean Miller will be hired as the new head basketball coach at the University of Texas, a high ranking official told the Austin American-Statesman Sunday.
— Cedric Golden (@CedGolden) March 23, 2025Golden’s report has since been confirmed by multiple other outlets. Terry spent 2 full seasons as Texas’s head coach after taking over for Chris Beard midway through the 2022-23 season. He led the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in his first NCAA Tournament, but struggled to maintain that success over the past couple of years. Texas squeaked into the NCAA Tournament in each of the past 2 seasons but failed to advance beyond the Round of 64.
Miller brings a wealth of experience and has great pedigree as a head coach. He’s had 2 stints as Xavier’s head coach but also led Arizona’s program from 2009-21. Miller has made the Elite Eight 4 times across his 20 seasons as a head coach.
Texas will hope that Miller can bring the program a sustained level of success. The Longhorns have not reached the 2nd weekend of the NCAA Tournament in back to-back years since 2003-04.
