The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned catcher Adrian Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno, the team announced Friday.
The move means Jose Herrera, who is out of minor league options, has won the backup catcher spot behind Gabriel Moreno.
With Arizona optioning the catcher, the D-backs now have 34 players in major league camp.
Del Castillo marks the latest D-back optioned to the minors this spring after both Jordan Lawlar and Drey Jameson were sent down two days prior.
The catching prospect heads to Reno after appearing in nine spring training games for Arizona in 2025.
In 24 plate appearances, he slashed .125/.125/.167 with a .292 OPS. He recorded three hits and was struck out 12 times.
Del Castillo’s Cactus League was cut short due to a minor lower back/side issue. The last game he appeared in was March 11, when he threw out Kansas City’s Maikel Garcia at second base.
The catcher did, however, log a simulated game with pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on Wednesday.
The D-backs have six games left in their spring training/exhibition slate before opening up the regular season against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
