Nearly All Tesla Cybertrucks Recalled for Very Concerning Reason

Tesla Cybertrucks are facing a recall for one very concerning reason.

On Thursday, March 20, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled nearly all Cybertrucks currently on the road—a total of more than 46,000—due to an exterior panel that may fly off while driving.

The faulty panel, said to be called a "cant rail assembly," is found between the windshield and the roof on both sides of the vehicle.

If it were to detach or separate mid-drive, the report notes it could create a “road hazard” for passengers and fellow motorists, increasing the risk of “injury or collision."

The NHTSA noted that the piece may “delaminate” from the structural adhesive, necessitating a fix to apply additional reinforcements.

Affected electric vehicles include all 2024 and 2025 models, manufactured from November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025.

Tesla, the company which Elon Musk serves as CEO and largest shareholder of, said it will replace the panels free of charge after becoming aware of the issue earlier in the year.

Owners of recalled Cybertrucks will get notification letters that are expected to be sent out on May 19, 2025.

Jimmy Kimmel addressed the recall on Jimmy Kimmel Live during the March 20 monologue, noting, “Today they issued a recall of nearly all 46,000 of their Cybertrucks. That’s the eighth Cybertruck recall since they came out in November of 2023. It’s 15 months — 8 recalls.”

“I mentioned last night multiple Teslas were burned at a Tesla facility in Las Vegas. Authorities are now investigating which Teslas were set on fire — and which set themselves on fire,” Kimmel noted in the punchline.

The internet had similar jabs, with many noting, “That thing is literally a trash can on wheels,” as another added, “Note to self, do not drive behind one of these.”

Others praised Tesla for sending out the recall, suggesting that, in the past, other car manufacturers ignored or took "years” to fix issues.

Tesla has been taking quite a hit due to Musk’s political involvement, with the stock tanking from a $1.7 trillion valuation to under $800 billion in recent days. Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and charging stations have also been targets of vandalism, an act which the US Attorney General Pam Bondi said is now considered "domestic terrorism" and punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
