THE Minnesota Vikings have made a huge decision regarding quarterback JJ McCarthy’s future with the team.
The reported decision made by Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and company comes after being linked with 41-year-old free agent Aaron Rodgers.
On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Vikings have told teams calling about McCarthy‘s services that they are moving forward with the 2024 first-round pick.
The report added that the Vikings are interested in adding a veteran quarterback, either through trade or free agency, but Rodgers won’t be pursued.
Rodgers appears that he is likely to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers or New York Giants.
Both teams reportedly have standing offers out to the four-time NFL MVP.
But Rodgers has seemed to be holding out hope that the Vikings would target him.
And a recent report by The Athletic revealed that there’s a chance Rodgers could retire rather than sign with the Steelers or Giants.
It’s easy to see why Rodgers would prefer to land with the Vikings.
The franchise is coming off a 14-3 season which saw Sam Darnold play his best season in a quarterback-friendly offense in 2024.
The Steelers did acquire star wideout D.K. Metcalf through a trade, but they lost five consecutive games and suffered a disappointing first-round exit in 2024.
They have also lost their last five playoff games.
And the Giants are coming off a disaster 3-14 campaign.
But the Vikings appear to be comfortable with McCarthy as their starter in 2025.
The Michigan Wolverines product was the No. 10 pick in last year’s draft after helping the college to a national title.
However, McCarthy suffered a season-ending torn meniscus injury last preseason that ended his rookie campaign.
He would watch Darnold put together a 35-touchdown season and help lead the Vikings to a division title.
But Darnold struggled down the stretch and the Vikings lost the first game in the playoffs.
The Vikings allowed Darnold to hit free agency and the Seattle Seahawks scooped him up, signing him to a three-year, $100.5 million contract after trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders.
McCarthy will enter his second season as the No. 1 quarterback.
