The 2005 movie Hitch is one of the more popular rom-coms of its era. It pulled in over $370 million at the worldwide box office, and no wonder, since it starred heavy-hitters Will Smith, Kevin James and Eva Mendes.
The movie’s director, Andy Tennant, recently revealed to Business Insider that a sequel is in the works.

“I guess Will is developing a Hitch sequel without me,” he said. “I just found out about it three months ago. I had a really good idea for a sequel, and I was talking to an executive at Sony, and he said Will’s production company is developing a sequel. Hey, that’s Hollywood.”
Not much is known about the sequel yet, but here’s what we found out from Tennant’s interview and what fans might expect from a Hitch 2.
So far, no timeline or release date has been announced for the Hitch sequel. Since all we know is that the film is in development, it’s likely still in early stages, which could put it a year or more out from release.
What is Hitch 2 about?
The plot details for Hitch 2 have also not been announced. Tennant had an idea for a sequel that he was going to pitch, but Smith’s production company beat him to the punch.
But Tennant told Business Insider, “I don’t have anything against Will. He hired me to make this movie. It was not an easy job for anybody, but we went around the world with the movie … And when it was over, my time with Will was over. That was it. And I have never heard from him since.”
Although we don’t know exactly what Hitch 2 will be about, it’s bound to incorporate some elements from the original plot: a professional “date doctor” (Smith) whose work involves teaching men how to get dates with women. The more modern term for this might be “pick-up artist,” but hey, the premise worked in 2005.
In Hitch, Smith’s character becomes interested in a columnist (Mendes) who’s not impressed by his usual dating tricks. Over the course of the movie he realizes love can’t be treated like a job—it needs to happen organically.
In a Reddit thread, some users guessed at what the Hitch 2 plot might involve. “I think they could do a cool twist on it,” wrote SubtleSeraph. “I worked for a dating coach for a while about 10 years ago whose entire philosophy was trying to break down the toxicity of the relationship coach movement. He basically taught people how to have real genuine conversations and connections and to build relationships by learning how to speak to people … The end of Hitch kind of picked up on the fact that what made Kevin James's character so attractive was him being himself, so I think it would be really cool to see [a movie where Hitch] teaches people how to have real connections through dating.”

Who will be in the cast for Hitch 2?
Since Hitch 2 has barely been announced—and only because the original director talked about it—we don’t have any cast information yet. Will Smith’s production company is behind it, so it could be that Smith returns to the screen as Alex “Hitch” Hitchens.
Eva Mendes, who played the female love interest in Hitch, stepped away from acting in recent years; so if Smith does star in the sequel he’ll likely need a new love interest or the film will have to focus on a different couple.
