Warning! This article contains spoilers for the events of the Severance Season 2 finale.
Fans waited patiently for nearly three years for new episodes of Severance. The new season has now aired all 10 of its episodes and viewers were given answers to many questions they have had about all the ongoings of Lumon, Innies and, of course, the goats. The ending of Season 1 left us with a major cliffhanger, with Mark (Adam Scott), Helly (Britt Lower) and Irving (John Turturro) all waking up in the outside world, uncovering things about their life. Helly is an Eagan, Irv is investigating the company and Mark finds out his wife is actually alive).
But there was still a lot more to learn. Over the course of 10 episodes, the true nature of Lumon's plans has been revealed, bit by bit. After a failed attempt to infiltrate from the inside, Irving was fired after discovering that the Helly returning to the severed floor was not their co-worker but an Eagan. Dylan (Zach Cherry) is struggling with whether his work is fulfilling. Mark finally decided to try to reintegrate himself, which led him back to Ms. Cobel (Patricia Arquette), who we learn is the creator of the severance procedure.
Here's everything that happened in the Severance Season 2 finale.

Severance Season 2 Ending, Explained
We ended last episode with Devon (Jen Tullock) bringing Mark to the pregnancy cabin from Season 1, where they meet Ms. Cobel. They use the mechanisms of severance being available at the cabin to let Innie Mark communicate with Outie Mark. In order to gain his trust, she reveals he can save Gemma (Dichen Lachman) and what the "mysterious and important" work has been about this whole time.
Each case file Mark has completed is a different...in order to test. Cobel tells him he needs to get back into the office, complete the Cold Harbor case, and get Ms. Casey out of the building. It will require some back-and-forth between Mark's dual entities in order to get her to safety. Not only can Mark save his wife, but Devon tells him it could take down the company.
That worries Mark, as ending Lumon means the Innies would be killed. Through a conversation with himself via the use of a camcorder, the two versions of Mark try to make sense of what happens after they save Gemma. When Outie Mark can't explain how the survival of both of them would work, Innie Mark gets angry. He loves Helly and knows if reintegrating even works, he'll lose her forever.

Ms. Cobel explains it all to him. The numbers are his wife, a doorway into the mind of Gemma. When he works on the numbers and processes his feelings, he's sorting them into tempers. Cobel calls them "the building blocks of her mind." Every file has been a consciousness of Gemma and, therefore, a new Innie. And Cold Harbor? Well, it's the last one.
Having served their purpose, all of the work Mark has done will be in service of something else. The corporation will take all of the rewards of his efforts while never letting Mark (his Innie or his Outie) bear any of the fruits. He doesn't believe it and storms out.
Helly confronts her father
Jame Eagen (Michael Siberry) stands in the doorway of MDR, telling Helly it was a "funny speech she gave at the part.". Helly doesn't hold back, telling him, "God, you're f-ing weird." grabbing a pen to potentially attack the man if necessary. Jame makes an admission that he doesn't love his daughter. While she used to be a lot like Kier, but it left her as she got older. That's what he's looking for: Someone who embodies Kier Eagan. When Helly tells him he'll burn in hell, Jame replies that he has finally found the spirit.
The elevator dings, and Mark returns to the office. He's clean-shaven and ready to get to work. Once again, the paintings on the floor have been changed. This time, Mark is featured prominently, surrounded by all the individuals we've seen over the course of two seasons. Following behind him is Helly, and the two embrace.
They walk down the normally well-lit office, now shrouded in darkness. The only thing illuminated is a wax figurine of Kier Eagan that is there to watch Mark complete the file. They sit down and get to work, but they're unsure if this is the right path. Can they trust anything anybody has said to them?
Worried he'll lose her, Helly ultimately tells Mark to complete the file so he can save Gemma. "I'm her," she tells him (we'll get to this later).
As the file is near completion, Gemma gets escorted by the nurse Cecily (Sandra Bernhard). Mark finishes sorting the numbers, and the file is closed. Cue the song and dance — literally! The Kier statue begins to speak, telling Mark that upon completing the file, he's become "one of the most important people in history". Mr. Milchick (Trammel Tillman) arrives with a full marching band to celebrate the completion of the file.
Helly and Mark use the band as a means to pull off their heist of Gemma. Helly, with the eventual help of Dylan, locks Milchick in the bathroom with the use of the vending machine while Mark rushes to get his wife.
Dylan hears from his Outie
Before they were facing off on opposite sides of a vending machine, Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) arrives at the office and greets Dylan. His Outie has responded to his resignation request. Milchick leaves him to read it alone as he is duly swamped (evidenced by his magnificent run out of the room). His Outie is upset about his Innie engaging with his wife, but he gets it. He always wished he had the confidence of his Innie, and a part of him is happy knowing that part of him exists somewhere. Maybe someday Gretchen (Merritt Wever) will see what she sees in his Innie. Dylan is allowed to leave, but his Outie hopes he'll stay.

As the file is completed, Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) goes to a room with Lorne (Gwendoline Christie) and a goat. After she tells him "Mammalians Nurturable brings an offering" and confirms that it has "verve and wiles, the enforcer tells her to kill the goat. But they are interrupted by the sound of banging. It's Mark trying to get to the dark hallway. Drummond attacks Mark, but with the help of Lorne, is able to hold him at gunpoint.
Mark brings Drummond down the hallway and enters the elevator, only to kill when he reverts from his Innie to his Outie.
Meanwhile, Gemma enters the Cold Harbor room. While she doesn't remember her identity, she sees a crib and a screwdriver. Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson), watching her, tells her to to disassemble it. Mark finds the Cold Harbor room and uses the blood on his tie (Mr. Drummond's) to get into the room. Finally, he's reunited with Gemma. She's confused but he explains everything to her as Dr. Mauer watches on in horror. Stepping out of the room, she embraces him, and they flee.
Mark stays behind
Sirens blare as Mark and Gemma rush to the elevator. Dr. Mauer is unable to stop them, yelling, "You'll kill them all!" just before the elevator goes up. Mark transforms back into his Innie, and Gemma becomes Ms. Casey. There, Mark guides her through the hallway to the door, where she becomes severed once again.
Mark contemplates leaving, but Helly appears behind him. With Gemma free, Mark grabs Helly by the hand and stays behind in the office with her. The two run through the severed floor as the episode ends.
So what happens next?
Well, we can only theorize so much. But here's what we know!
Not only are Mark and Helly still inside Lumon on the severed floor, but they may also have total control over it. Mr. Drummond is dead, and Milchick is being held by Dylan and the marching band. Refusing to let his Innie die, Mark chooses to stay behind. Perhaps he will now hold himself hostage until he gets assurances that the life he's been promised (one with this version of Helly) is safe.
With Gemma on the outside, it seems possible that she could link up with Devon and Ms. Cobel to explain all that happened inside. This could lead to a very fun inversion of Severance so far where the Innie have been trying to get out of the building. Now, we may be looking at Outies trying to get inside the severed floor.
With Mark choosing to stay behind and Helly by his side, Severance ends Season 2 on yet another thrilling cliffhanger. But this time, the power dynamic has shifted. The Innies may finally have leverage. The myth of Kier is crumbling, the goats are still a mystery, and for the first time, Lumon doesn't seem untouchable.
Now that Gemma is free and the outside world is beginning to learn the truth, the question becomes: what happens when the walls between the selves come crashing down? Will reintegration become salvation — or self-destruction?
Season 3 can’t come soon enough.
