“He told me, ‘Hopefully you’ll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don’t make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody loves,” Jackson said. “He said, ‘Arnold’s got Terminator. Sylvester’s got Rocky, Rambo. I’ve got John McClane.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ And it didn’t occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role—and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury—that, Oh, I’m doing what Bruce said. I’ve got this character now.”
In a 2023 interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Jackson acted surprised when the host said he’s been playing the Nick Fury character for over 15 years. “Is that right?” he asked. “I just keep coming to work.”
He then shared a story that made it seem as if he was destined to play the character.
"I was in this comic book store years ago and there was this comic called The Ultimates and I picked it up and I looked at it and I was like, ‘I don’t remember giving anyone permission to use my image in a comic book.’ So I called my manager and was like, ‘I’m in the comic book store and…’ As I’m standing there looking at it and talking to her about it, I’m reading and it says, ‘If they do a movie about us, who do you want to be you?’ And the guy who looked like me said, ‘Samuel L. Jackson.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll call you back.’”
Jackson said he purchased the comic book and then drove over to his managers office, who called Marvel. They told his manager, “We hope to make some movies one day and we hope that when we do it Sam will be this guy,” Jackson recalled.
“Next thing I know I’m have a meeting with [Marvel] and they said, ‘Look, we’d like to offer you a nine picture deal to do this thing so at that time I’m like, ‘Nine pictures, how long I gotta stay alive to do nine pictures?’ Not knowing they were going to make nine movies in like 15 months or something like that,” he added. “So that contract was up real quick and they kept calling, so here I am, still being Nick Fury and loving every minute of it.”
