The Genius Way to Make Canned Frosting Taste Like Something From a Fancy Bakery

Canned frosting just might be the unsung MVP of the baking aisle. It's always ready to rescue last-minute cupcakes or add a sweet finish to your favorite treats in seconds. Pop the lid, swipe it on and voilà! But while it's tasty right out of the can, canned frosting does have its limits, namely that you’re stuck with whatever flavor or color you bought. Or are you?

Thanks to an article from Southern Living from cookbook author, food writer and culinary expert Sheri Castle, we were reminded that canned frosting can also be a blank canvas for our culinary creativity. Our favorite trick? Stir in a bit of freeze-dried fruit powder to add a kick of flavor and color to canned frosting.

Canned frosting is pretty magical on its own, but sometimes it just needs that extra spark. Enter freeze-dried fruit powder. It's a simple addition that lets you dial up the flavor and create a one-of-a-kind twist on classic icing.

Not only does it infuse your frosting with vibrant, natural fruit flavor, but it also doubles as a dye, giving you gorgeous color without the need for artificial food coloring. Plus, this one-ingredient hack thickens the frosting ever so slightly, making it perfect for piping beautiful details and creating show-stopping peaks.

freeze-dried fruit is a great way to add flavor to your frostings! The recipe I am using here is for "American Buttercream" - 1 stick Salted butter - 1 stick Margarine -1/2 c. Vegetable Shortening *make sure everything is room temperature* and whip those 3 things together. In my food processor, I pulverized a 1.2 oz. bag of freeze-dried strawberries and added them in. I added 1 tbsp. of vanilla bean powder, then slowly added in 1 bag of powdered sugar (32 oz.) Lastly, I slowly drizzled milk in to achieve my desired smoothness - using heavy cream is usually my preference but I don't have any on hand. This frosting tastes like a milkshake and it is a beautiful pink color! #frosting #baking #yummy #homemade #strawberry

How to Add Freeze-Dried Fruit Powder to Canned Frosting

There are a few ways to go about adding freeze-dried fruit powder to canned frosting. If you prefer, you can simply buy freeze-dried fruit powder online and use that. But you can also make freeze-dried fruit powder yourself, and it’s surprisingly easy.

To go this route, you'll need some freeze-dried fruit, which is available in most health or specialty grocery stores like Trader Joe's and even at big box stores like Target. Add the freeze-dried fruit to a food processor. In about 30 seconds to a minute you'll have freeze-dried fruit powder.

Next, grab your canned frosting. A good rule of thumb is to use frostings like vanilla or buttercream or cream cheese. These white-toned varieties are usually your best bet if you’re looking to produce a frosting with the most high-impact color.

Add your frosting into a bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or dump it in a bowl and use a hand mixer. Beat your frosting to whip it up. Next, add your freeze-dried fruit powder and beat until the frosting and the powder are thoroughly combined. Spread the tinted frosting over your favorite cake or cupcakes.

For a more vibrant look, you can top your cake or cupcakes with the frosting (we recommend beating the canned frosting with a mixer until it's fluffy) and then sprinkle the finished treats with the powdered freeze-dried fruit. Either way, this easy upgrade will help you create treats that taste as good as they look.
