A fire sparked by a kitchen appliance heavily damaged an Ocean Beach apartment Thursday, displacing two people and killing their cat.
The blaze, in the 4900 block of Del Monte Ave., erupted at about 7 a.m. Thursday, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.
The two residents of the apartment were not home at the time, but firefighters found a cat inside, stricken by apparent smoke inhalation. Police and medics tried to resuscitate the feline with an oxygen mask and other emergency measures but could not save the animal.
The blaze heavily damaged the kitchen of the residence and caused heavy smoke damage throughout the unit, SDFRD Battalion Chief Jeff Phillips told OnSceneTV.
The American Red Cross was called in to help the people who live in the apartment arrange for emergency shelter.
