Cleveland Browns target Chiefs Super Bowl-winning quarterback with Russell Wilson decision set to be made

THE Cleveland Browns have eyed a Kansas City Chiefs quarterback who has a Super Bowl on his resume.

The Browns’ latest reported interest in a signal-caller comes after meeting with 10-time Pro Bowler and free agent Russell Wilson last week.

While the Browns wait for Wilson to decide where he wants to play in 2025, they are targeting possible alternatives at quarterback

The Browns and Carson Wentz have a “mutual interest” in agreeing to a contract that could make him their quarterback if Wilson signs elsewhere, per Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Wentz would likely be a bridge quarterback in Cleveland.

The team also traded for former-first-round pick Kenny Pickett earlier this month.

The Browns met with Wilson last Thursday, but the two sides didn’t reach a deal.

The 36-year-old then visited the New York Giants the following day.

Wilson’s next destination hinges on whatever decision Aaron Rodgers makes as the four-time NFL MVP is also a free agent and has yet to decide on whether he wants to join the Giants or Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’s been known that Wilson has preferred to remain in Pittsburgh where he played last season.

The Steelers recently acquired D.K. Metcalf to pair with George Pickens as the two players seem like a fit for Wilson’s deep-ball abilities.

Metcalf also played with Wilson for three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks from 2019 to 2021.

The Browns have two issues in their pursuit of Wilson.

The first? They are coming off a disaster 3-14 season.

And the most important issue is cost.

They have a little over $10 million in cap space, but their effective cap space is just $1.7 million as they have yet to sign their draft picks.

Cost is an issue thanks to the $230 million contract they handed to Deshaun Watson, who has had disappointing campaigns with the franchise.

The Browns have three void years on Watson’s contract from 2027 to 2029 as the first of those years cont $53.8 million against their cap.

A deal with Wentz wouldn’t be costly.

Last season, the 2017-18 Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion quarterback signed a one-year, $1.2 million with the Chiefs.

Wentz played in three games for the Chiefs and went 12-of-19 for 118 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

He was last a starting quarterback during the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders.

During that campaign, Wentz threw for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in eight games.

The Browns could also draft a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

They have been linked with former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
