AT THE BIG A
Angel Stadium again was the site for high school baseball games this spring.
Fullerton and Villa Park played each other at Angel Stadium on Monday when Fullerton beat Villa Park 3-2. A steady, light rain threatened to stop the game in the middle innings. Stadium personnel allowed the game to continue.
Fullerton senior first baseman Miguel Velasquez homered in the top of the first inning on the first pitch he saw, sending a rainbow shot over the left-field fence.
“That was surreal,” said Velasquez who was mobbed by teammates waiting for him outside of the dugout. “It was a great experience to play there as a senior, having a great time with the boys.”
Villa Park coach Burt Call, who recently got his 500th career coaching win, had coached and played on The Big A field. He led Mater Dei to a CIF-SS Division 1 championship game victory there in 2005 and was a star player on the Capistrano Valley baseball team that won a CIF-SS championship game at the stadium in 1983.
Segerstrom will be the last Orange County high school team to play at Angel Stadium this season on March 28 when the Jaguars play California of Whittier in a 6:30 p.m. game.
Teams that want to play at Angel Stadium enter a lottery. Part of the arrangement is that players are given ticket vouchers to sell for upcoming Angels games to help defray costs.
Monday’s game was part of the Ryan Lemmon Tournament that begins in full on March 29.
The Angels are the only Major League Baseball team that invites high school teams to play regular-season games on their field.
