A monthlong search for a missing Denver man in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has ended after a team of park rangers and a search and rescue team found human remains, the park said Tuesday.
The remains, believed to be those of 31-year-old Jordan Marsters, were found in a remote and highly technical area in the wilderness area of the national park, Lori Rome, a spokesperson for the park, said in a news release.
Marsters’ family reported him missing to Denver police Feb. 15 and park rangers found clues that led them to believe Marsters was in the park in Montrose County, the park said.
Authorities believe Marsters’ death was unwitnessed and are still investigating the circumstances.
Because the remains were found in such technical terrain, park authorities are asking adjacent parks for help with the recovery, officials said. Once recovered, the medical examiner’s office will lead the effort to identify the remains and determine a cause of death.
Several agencies assisted in scouring the 48-mile canyon, including drone teams from Montrose police and the county sheriff’s department, Denver police, technical search teams with Friends of Black Canyon Search and Rescue Volunteers, Montrose County Posse Search and Rescue Volunteers and private investigators.
