Observations at the famous Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii that track the growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could be the latest federal government function threatened by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
The New York Times reported Friday that a federal laboratory in Hilo, Hawaii, that manages the observatory on the north flank of Mauna Loa Volcano could close in August, according to a copy of an internal document viewed by the newspaper.
The observatory is the source of the Keeling Curve, which scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography initiated in 1958. The curve has tracked the steady rise of CO2 to levels far above any experienced during human history.
The measurement program is named for Scripps scientist Charles Keeling, and continues to be maintained by his son, Ralph, who is a climate science professor at Scripps in La Jolla.
The scientific consensus is that rising levels CO2 will warm the earth, potentially creating a climate crisis. But President Trump has called this a hoax. His energy secretary, Chris Wright, has acknowledged the rise in CO2, but contends it is an acceptable result of economic growth.
The observatory and lab in Hilo are both part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which faces over 2,000 layoffs ordered by DOGE.
