Mac Jones is once again on the move, and this time he’s heading to the West Coast to try to revive his NFL career.
The former Alabama star quarterback who led the Crimson Tide to the 2020 national championship with a historic season agreed to a 2-year contract worth $7 million, with $5 million guaranteed. The contract details were reported by The Associated Press on Wednesday night, and a source told the AP that the deal has a maximum value of $11.5 million.
On Friday, the 49ers’ social media tweeted out a picture of Jones while playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. It was an official welcome by the 49ers, with the tweet containing a handshake emoji between “Mac Jones” and “Bay Area.” The team was rolling out the red carpet for the 26-year-old Jacksonville native, as the tweet’s headline read: “Welcome to the Bay.”

After the record-setting season in 2020 when he threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdown passes and just 4 interceptions in leading Alabama to what turned out to be the last national title of the Nick Saban era, things haven’t gone according to plan for Jones.
He was the 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft by the New England Patriots, who decided to make Jones their franchise quarterback. But Jones struggled in 3 seasons in New England, then spent last season in Jacksonville, sharing time with Trevor Lawrence.
Now, Jones will get another shot to prove himself in San Francisco, although Brock Purdy is entrenched as the starting quarterback. Ironically, the 49ers could’ve taken Jones in 2021, but they instead took quarterback Trey Lance with the 3rd overall pick, 12 selections before the Patriots chose Jones.
