Greeley woman sentenced to life in prison for October 2021 murder and arson

A 23-year-old Greeley woman will spend the rest of her life in prison for the October 2021 murder of a Greeley man and then setting his house on fire, the Weld County District Attorney’s Office said this week.

Stacy Rodriguez was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole Wednesday for the first-degree murder, first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased human body and two counts of second-degree burglary by Weld County Judge Vincente Vigil.

Rodriguez was also sentenced to 32 years for first-degree arson, 12 years for tampering with a deceased human body and 12 years for each burglary charge.

Rodriguez and co-defendant Hosanna Varela, 26, met Chris Dickerson, 35, at a Greeley bar on the evening of Oct. 2, 2021, seven days before Dickerson’s 36th birthday. The women went back to Dickerson’s home for what was to be a casual gathering. Rodriguez stabbed Dickerson to death and set the house on fire.

“Chris did not deserve to die that day that he befriended those two young women,” said Allen Dickerson, Chris Dickerson’s father during a sentencing hearing Wednesday. “Chris deserved so much more in his life.”

A jury convicted Rodriguez after a two-week-long trial that began late last month. The defense argued Rodriguez had stabbed Dickerson in self-defense, while prosecutors said Rodriguez was the aggressor in nearly every interaction with Dickerson as he pleaded with the two to leave his home.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia and Deputy District Attorney Timothy McCormack prosecuted the case.

“This entire process has been a joke to this defendant,” Pirraglia was quoted in a news release from the district attorney’s office. “She jokes. She laughs. The jury got to see her true character which is nothing but diabolical and despicable. She is a threat to society and there’s no place for her in it.”

Varela pleaded guilty to first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased human body and accessory to a crime. She was sentenced to 32 years in in the Colorado Department of Corrections system in January 2024.

“I hope this verdict brings some peace. I hope after today you get some closure in this journey,” Pirraglia told the victim’s family. “This family gave us the strength to keep going the past three years, and today we got justice for Christopher.”
