How Wendy Williams Guardianship Came to Be Revealed on The View

Wendy Williams is explaining how her guardianship came to be.

The former Wendy Williams Show host appeared in a prerecorded interview alongside her healthcare advocate, Ginalia Monterrosa, during the Friday, March 14, episode of The View. The pair openly discussed her financial guardianship, under which she was placed in 2022 after her financial advisor claimed she wasn't of "sound mind." Williams, 60, has reportedly been living in a New York City care facility since 2023 after allegedly being diagnosed with aphasia and dementia.

"The guardianship was triggered by Wells Fargo. There was some unusual activity going on in Wendy's bank account," Monterrosa began, noting that Wells Fargo froze the account and initiated a guardianship.

"I didn't mind it at that time at all because it's about my money and keeping my money safe," Williams added. "But at this point in my life, I want to terminate the guardianship and move on with my life if that's possible at all."

Since it was a voluntary relationship in the beginning, Williams was "fine" with it because of wanting to get her finances in order.

"What ended up happening was Wendy didn't realize that this person was going to take her whole entire life," Monterrosa continued. "She just thought someone was just going to come and protect her."

Williams added: "Everybody played really nice to me, and I was like, OK, no problem. Where am I going next? I'm going to Connecticut. And next thing you know, from New York, I'm in Connecticut and the entire building is [a] memory unit. It was worse than where I am in New York. It was horrible. Nothing but grass and trees and memory units and, why am I there?"

In recent days, following a plea for assistance, police took her to Lenox Hill Hospital, where it was reportedly determined that her mental capacity was intact.

After Williams claimed she received mental competency tests and "passed with flying colors,” she said her "most important thing" was "getting out” of the guardianship.

Williams' diagnosis came after years of cognitive decline and shortly before the premiere of a controversial Lifetime documentary chronicling her physical and financial struggles.

The Wendy Williams Show premiered in 2008 and ran for 13 seasons before airing its final episode in 2022. Williams was forced to take a series of hiatuses in later seasons due to her health issues, which also include Graves’ disease and lymphedema.
