THE Washington Commanders could be hit with punishment after being accused of illegal tampering before NFL free agency began.
The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be in the same boat as the Commanders, with both franchises in hot water for an alleged violation with a star player.
On Monday, two days before NFL free agency, offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley opted to return to the Baltimore Ravens on a three-year, $60 million deal.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer appeared on a NBC Sports Boston TV broadcast and shared that the Commanders, Chiefs, and New England Patriots sent offers to Stanley – with all three over $20 million per year, respectively.
However, the three teams were accused of communicating with Stanley’s agency while he was still under contract with the Ravens.
“Kansas City was right there with them,” Breer said alongside NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry. “So Kansas City and Baltimore were both at around [$20 million annually].
“Washington and New England were both over [$24 million annually].
“I’m not sure how far they went.
“Obviously this stuff was spoken about conceptually, I guess this is the best way to put it. Some free agency may have happened over the weekend.”
Perry noticed Breer’s claim and said, “This may have been illegal tampering.”
It wasn’t revealed when the Commanders, Chiefs, and Patriots began to negotiate with Stanley’s agent, Roc Nation Sports’ Kim Miale.
Any contract discussions before noon Eastern on Monday would result in a violation of NFL tampering rules.
Franchises can only speak with the representatives of other teams’ free agents from Monday afternoon on.
The signing period then begins on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern.
The NFL has penalized teams for illegal tampering in recent memory.
Last year, the league took away a fifth-round pick from the Atlanta Falcons for tampering during their negotiating process to sign quarterback Kirk Cousins, wideout Darnell Mooney, and tight end Charlie Woerner.
In 2022, the Miami Dolphins were slammed with punishment for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton.
The Dolphins were fined $1.5 million and lost a first-round pick and another pick in 2023.
The NFL has yet to comment on the accusations concerning the Commanders, Chiefs, and Patriots.
The Commanders would pivot in a big way after missing out on Stanley.
Dan Quinn’s team traded for Houston Texans star left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
The 30-year-old has made five Pro Bowls in the past six seasons.
