Last February, Shearer’s Foods, LLC announced a recall of nearly 15,000 cases of oyster crackers packaged and labeled under a variety of different brand names. The recall, which cites the discovery of stainless steel wire found in the product, was initiated on February 21 and then officially upgraded to a Class II recall on March 11.
For those unaware, the FDA defines a Class II recall as the second-most severe risk level a recall event can receive. This indicates a situation in which “the use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Per the FDA’s enforcement report, the oyster crackers in question were distributed in 20-pound bulk packages that were not meant for retail sale to Target, Walmart and Giant Eagle stores in the following states:
Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

It is important to note that, since the recall was announced back in February, the recalled products should likely already be off retail shelves. In any event, should the identified products above be in your possession, it is recommended that you avoid consumption entirely. Instead, throw them away or return to their place of purchase for a refund.
