David Tennant Does a Podcast with…
David Tennant began these podcasts in 2018, with a second run in 2020. It’s been a long wait for this third series — he is a busy man, after all — but it doesn’t disappoint. The format remains the same: a long and open-ended conversation, often with people he’s worked with (previous guests include Olivia Colman and Michael Sheen). But rest assured this isn’t an exercise in luvvies massaging one another’s egos, although his guests obviously feel comfortable, as is witnessed in some of the stories shared by new guests like actor/comedian Ben Schwartz and actress/activist Jameela Jamil. The key conversation in this series, however, is with writer/producer Russell T Davies, including a teaser that will thrill all those Whovians out there. ANNA JONES
DOCUMENTARY
Football on Trial: the Manchester City Charges
This is a brave venture from the BBC, because it’s not clear which football fans will listen to a podcast dedicated to one club, known primarily for being richer than the other clubs, and when all the lawyers in London have seemingly been deployed to delay the titular trial. The verdict, when it arrives, will be delivered by two judges and an accountant, so the chances of us understanding it are likely to be slim. In which case this makes a useful primer. DAVID HEPWORTH
DOCUMENTARY
Criminally Queer: the Bolton 7
Forgive my plain speaking but, if you went to a heterosexual orgy in 1998, you couldn’t be prosecuted. It wasn’t the same for gay men. Less than 30 years ago seven gay and bisexual men in Bolton were convicted, under 1956 legislation, for consensual group sex behind locked doors. The case is important because it led, within two years, to much-needed changes in the law. The first episode of this telling of the story has too much background, but stick with it. DAVID McGILLIVRAY
MENTAL HEALTH
How Do You Cope?
John Robins goes solo with this popular podcast, originally hosted with Elis James, which finds a new home on Wondery. Justin Hawkins of the Darkness is first in the hotseat to thoughtfully reflect on his struggles with fame and addiction, discussing his obsession with darts and becoming Meat Loaf’s “support animal”, while Robins questions him with reassuring care and compassion. Upcoming episodes promise insights into the lives of Sophie Willan, Rosie Jones and Joe Wicks. EMMA SIMMONDS
FOOD/SCIENCE
Melting Pot
We all know that cookery shows are ten a penny. But this six-part series is a little different. Presenter Jay Behrouzi travels across the UK to explore world cuisine and — with the help of resident scientist Big Manny — digs into the science behind the food. Want to know about how spice molecules chemically infuse into your meal? Look no further. With guests ranging from chefs to bakers and even actors, Behrouzi’s enthusiasm sizzles like a hot pan on a summer’s day. JAMES MOTTRAM

Three People with Rebecca Front
Bafta-winning actor Rebecca Front (The Thick of It) is the genial host of this illuminating podcast where friends and colleagues from film and TV are invited to reveal the three people who have changed their lives, in the past, present and future. First up is writer and satirist Armando Iannucci, who describes his trio as two remarkable people and, well, a fictional character whose “action slacks” were just the start to becoming a Norfolk legend. FOLK HISTORY
Heart and Stone
Even those who normally run a mile from hand-knitted shawls and other so-called folk craft may be drawn to Meg Elliot’s study of some of the more unorthodox byways of folk culture, exploring our heritage through its stories, places and music. These include queer and black British folk song and the stone circle in Glasgow built, not 3,000 years ago, but in 1979. Elliot, who’s been intrigued by the shock of the old since she was 15, asks the basic question, “Who are the folk?”, the answer to which is us. DAVID McGILLIVRAY
MOTORING
Women in the Driving Seat
Erin Baker, editorial director of Auto Trader, describes herself as “an outspoken advocate for narrowing the gender gap” within the motor industry and the way it interacts with consumers. The result is this eight-part series where she invites female guests to talk about their relationship with cars and driving. Presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson and tetraplegic racing driver Nathalie McCloin are the first guests. Neither has a problem putting their foot on the conversational throttle. ANNA JONES
HUMOUR
The World of Wodehouse
According to humorist Lynne Truss, “he simply was the greatest, funniest writer that ever lived”. She’s talking about PG Wodehouse, the 50th anniversary of whose death in 1975 has prompted this quite splendid, highly digestible series in which eminent superfans share their love of the creator of Jeeves and Wooster as well as of so many other imperishable characters, and choose favourite passages. Alexander Armstrong presides over project Plum with aplomb. SIMON O’HAGAN
