"Hi friends! Unfortunately I've been dealing with an avulsion fracture of my patella and will not be able to compete on senior night," she wrote. "It absolutely breaks my heart to not get the opportunity to compete in the PMAC one last time."
"Tiger fans, you've been so good to me! Thank you for the endless support and as always Geaux Tigers!" she concluded, signing off the message as "Liv."
According to a case study from UConn Health, a patellar fracture—or fracture of the kneecap—"may occur after direct blow to patella, indirect injury, after ACL reconstruction, after total knee prosthesis, or in the setting of pathologic fracture" and typically causes pain, swelling, and "decreased knee extension strength/tolerance."
An avulsion fracture, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is typically seen in young athletes and occurs when a "piece of bone attached to a ligament or tendon breaks away from the main part of the bone," which happens most often when a person suddenly changes direction.
Dunne didn't specify how she obtained the injury, nor what her treatment plan or timeline was. However, the Cleveland Clinic suggests it takes about 12 weeks for an avulsion fracture to heal completely.
Dunne graduated from LSU last May but returned for a fifth season with the women's gymnastics team.
