What’s Next for Davante Adams After Being Released by the Jets?

The New York Jets continued to rid themselves of the disappointing Aaron Rodgers era by releasing his favorite wide receiver, Davante Adams, on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was among multiple national reporters to report the release, which places an intriguing veteran option on the market less than a week from the start of free agency.

For the Jets, who traded for Adams last season, releasing the receiver rid them of another reminder of what could have been (and never was) during the Rodgers era and freed $29.9 million in salary cap space in the process. Adams had no remaining guaranteed money on the five-year, $140 million deal he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. New York began the day with roughly $23 million in available cap space and now have $52.4 million (via OTC), which ranks ninth across the league.

As for Adams, the release provides him with an opportunity to find a new home, which could involve a reunion with pal Aaron Rodgers, a shot at a Super Bowl with a contender, or a return to Green Bay, perhaps.

Even at 32, Adams was still a dominant force last season, hauling in 85 passes for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in Las Vegas and New York. Adams’ 1,000-yard season marked his fifth consecutive, and his eight touchdowns put him at 103 career scores, the sixth-most through a player’s first 11 seasons.

So, what’s next for Davante Adams?

The Green Bay Packers said during their end-of-season press conferences that they’re looking to add a veteran receiver to help quarterback Jordan Love and a group of talented young wideouts. In a tweet where he tagged Adams last month, the Packers safety Xavier McKinney recruited Adams to Green Bay. Davante Adams spoke about Green Bay’s potential desire to add a veteran receiver on the “Up and Adams” show with Kay Adams.

“You’ve got to see what’s up with Doubs and Christian,” Adams said on the “Up and Adams” show.  “Obviously, Romeo having a few plays this year where he ended up a little banged up and hit his head on the ground, you never know. It’s kind of that Tua situation where it could be a week, or it can extend out longer than that. We’ll see. I’m praying for him either way,”

“It kind of depends on the health of the team. It’s looking right now like obviously they might need some receiver help in one way or the other just based off what they have available. … Maybe a veteran or something in there, we’ll see.”

Beyond Green Bay, there’s the known affection for playing with Aaron Rodgers, which prompted the Jets to trade for Adams during the 2024 season. However, Rodgers’ status is up in the air, and we’re not sure where (or if) he will play next season. Adams is the type of receiver who probably garners significantly more interest than the aging and declining Rodgers on the open market this month.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that Adams desires to play on the West Coast (and he still owns a home in Las Vegas) today. The Los Angeles Chargers could be an intriguing fit for Adams. They would check the West Coast box and allow him to play with a contender and an elite quarterback in Justin Herbert.
