Gene Hackman’s Touching Gesture for Neighbor After Just One Dinner

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, may not have been particularly close with any of their neighbors, but the residents of the quiet neighborhood in which they died are remembering them fondly after the tragic discovery of their bodies late last month.

While Bud Hamilton lived right next door to the couple for nearly twenty years, he and his wife only shared a single meal with them, shortly after they moved in. However, Hackman recalled that he was involved with the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico and donated one of his paintings for the foundation to auction off to raise money every year, up until last, according to new reporting from the New York Times.

Hackman's artwork was also on display in a local restaurant he had invested in, while his wife had co-founded a home goods store in the area, but the two were rarely seen out and about—especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. They didn't attend HOA meetings or neighborhood picnics, and, most recently, the only sign of their existence for neighbors was the movement of their trashcans back and forth for pickup.

“They have a gate, and we have a gate, and we just have never even seen each other,” another neighbor, James Everett, told the publication. That seclusion is one of the draws of the area, though, and anytime the couple ran into a neighbor, it was a pleasant interaction.

Helen Dufreche, a previous resident of the neighborhood, remembered the first time she met the beloved actor, who pulled up next to her and her dogs in his truck and complimented, “What cute puppies!”

When one of her dogs, Payton, was announced as a finalist for The Santa Fe New Mexican’s annual pet calendar, Arakawa stopped her to tell her that Hackman had recognized the pup in the paper.

Dufreche went home, she said, and told Payton, “Gene Hackman’s been talking about you.”

While carbon monoxide was one of the immediate suspicions in Hackman and his wife's deaths, it has been all but officially ruled out as a cause after their bodies tested negative for the gas. While their deaths have been labeled as "suspicious," investigators do not suspect foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.
