Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Co-Champs.

This time, FOUR teams are tied for the title. I’m not going to get into the weeds on the tiebreakers, it’s just a bunch of records versus each other and South Alabama was awarded the top seed based on a 4-1 record vs JMU/Troy/Arky St.

    Defending Champ

Top-seeded App State struggled last year, opening up the door for James Madison to punch their ticket as a two-seed. After the Mountaineers were upset in the semifinals, JM romped in the championship, beating Arkansas State by 20.

The Dukes then had a convincing win over 5th-seed Wisconsin (as 5.5-point underdogs) to open the big dance before running into actual Duke and losing by 38.

    Who will participate

All 14 teams are in, but some will have a hell of a time getting there as the Sun Belt has decided to implement the bracket that gives the top two seeds FIVE byes (see below)

How Many teams will the Sun Belt send to the tournament?

It’s a single-bid league for sure. Some decent teams here, but most are hovering around the 80-120 range, and you need to be a lot closer to 50th in the country even to sniff an at-large bid.

KenPom rates the Sun Belt as the 19th best of 31.

    Sun Belt Tournament Bracket

    There’s an argument for this.

It maximizes the ability to send the best team from your conference to the NCAA Tournament. But it ruins any Cinderella story within your league, and frankly, I think it’s boring.

Arkansas State +200 South Alabama +280 Troy +350 James Madison +380 Appalachian State +1500 Marshall +2200 Texas State +2500 Georgia State +20000 Georgia Southern +35000 ULM +50000 Southern Miss +50000 Old Dominion +50000 Louisiana +50000 Coastal Carolina +50000

    Sun Belt Tournament Prediction

The “ladder” bracket kind of rules out fun longshot since even some of the middle-of-the-pack teams would have to win four or five games in so many days and with no chance at catching a break via upsets until the finals.

Maybe the obvious answer is the favorite here, but in looking at the other three, James Madison does stick out a bit. There’s not a massive gap between the four top teams, and I like their profile a bit. That’s a good offense, a deep, balanced team that doesn’t turn the ball over and makes free throws. The 3-point shooting may be their undoing, but they have wins against Troy and Arkansas State already this year and have the tournament pedigree from last year!

    My Bet: James Madison +380
