Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney could be set for a summer switch to Championship-bound Wrexham.
Cairney, who has spent the last decade at Craven Cottage, is out of contract this summer and likely to end his ties with the west London club.
A new challenge at ambitious Welsh club Wrexham could await the 34-year-old, with the Red Dragons signalling their intentions ahead of the new season in the second tier.
A move for the Fulham captain would signal a statement of intent for Wrexham who are now just one division away from the promised land of the Premier League after three successive promotions.
Cairney has played a key role for Fulham throughout his ten-year career at Craven Cottage, and Wrexham believe his quality and experience could prove pivotal in their plans for next season.
He would also provide Wrexham with crucial know-how having achieved automatic promotion and Championship play-off success in the past.
He has clocked up a whopping 318 Championship games during his career on top of 412 Premier League matches.
The Scotland international has featured 23 times in the league for the Cottagers this season, scoring one goal.
And while his influence remains visible, a drop into the second tier to link up with Phil Parkinson’s high flyers is not out of the question.
Nottingham-born Cairney spent his early years at Leeds United before later being released at the age of 16 after doubts over his physicality.
The midfielder has since overcome the doubters and gone on to have a stellar Premier League career, with much of it spent as Fulham club captain.
Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds value the importance of experience in the squad, as it has proved fruitful over the past three seasons.
Phil Parkinson has been a big advocate of signing experienced starsGettyBoss Parkinson has added 36-year-old captain James McClean to his ranks, while Jay Rodriguez at 35 and 38-year-old Steven Fletcher have also played their part, with all three veterans boasting top flight experience.
In addition to the potential addition of Cairney, Wrexham have been linked with a move for outgoing Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy who will play his last game for the Foxes this weekend.
Wrexham currently have 11 players over the age of 30, with the possibility of further arrivals.
Although, 38-year-old goalkeeper Mark Howard has already announced he will leave the Racecourse Ground this summer after playing a part in all three promotion campaigns, and Fletcher is expected to join him with his contract up at the end of the season.
Parkinson recently disclosed the importance of Wrexham utilising the free-transfer market when bolstering their squad.
“We have always got our eye on players who are free transfers and going to be available, and we’ll continue to do that,” said the manager.
Parkinson used the free-transfer market well to help his side secure promotion last monthGetty“Recruitment is about getting a lot of tight decisions right and I felt we did that in January.
“We were under a little bit of pressure in January because we weren’t scoring enough goals and we had Sam Dalby doing great in Scotland, we had Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who we let go to Burton and did incredibly well.
“To hold our nerve and get the right players in made a difference and I was very pleased with that.”
