‘Good Morning America’ Fans Say Robin Roberts’ Look Behind the Scenes ‘Is Gold’

Robin Roberts gave fans a peek behind the curtain of Good Morning America’s Wicked tribute, and fans couldn’t help but call it “so cool.”

The veteran journalist took to Instagram to share a detailed behind-the-scenes look at how the morning show’s crew put together a wickedly good homage to the Oscar-nominated movie in celebration of the Academy Awards.

In a video posted on March 3 by both Roberts’ and GMA’s official Instagram page, a split-screen showed how Roberts and her on-air colleagues stood in front of a green screen to record their portions of the clip, while the final product played above.

Roberts channeled Cynthia Erivo’s character, Elphaba, as she donned a black witch’s hat and cape and pretended to balance on a broom, delivering lines inspired by the movie as her co-hosts took to their roles.

George Stephanopoulos appeared in the video as himself, wearing his usual suit and dress shirt and holding a fake newspaper called The Ozian Times with a sprawling headline that read “Robin Takes Flight!” As Roberts whipped past him in the edited clip, Stephanopoulos turned to the camera and asked, “is that Robin?”

Lara Spencer dressed like Galinda, played by Ariana Grande in the movie, wearing pale pink pajamas and matching robe. After asking Roberts what she was doing, she got into character and dramatically tossed her hair off her shoulders.

Michael Strahan was next in the video, and while his outfit wasn’t reminiscent of any particular character in the film adaptation of the Broadway smash, his booming voice as he said “I am Oz” into an old-fashioned microphone felt eerily reminiscent of Jeff Goldblum’s portrayal of the Wizard.

Ginger Zee, dressed like a Shiz University student, was the last piece of the puzzle. In the final clip it looked like she was hanging upside down from the spinning bookshelves in the movie’s library set but, as the raw footage showed, her hair was cleverly moved with wires. This gave the appearance of gravity while allowing her to stay on solid ground the whole time she filmed her segment.

Fans loved the video, declaring, “This is gold!” and stating, “This deserves an Emmy!” in the comments.

“this is so fun!! It is amazing to see how production creations get put together!” said a third fan.
