The Chicago Bears have an abundance of cap space with General Manager Ryan Poles calling the shots as he tries to fulfill the vision of Ben Johnson, the team’s new head coach. Filling Chicago’s offseason needs in free agency will go a long way toward getting this team back into the postseason hunt. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the more promising and available targets to see if there’s a fit for the Bears in 2025.

There have been a few rumors this offseason already linking Mack and his former team for a potential reunion, and it would make sense. While Mack is nearing the end of his career, he still has quite a bit of gas left in the tank as we saw over the last two seasons he played for the Chargers. The 34-year-old star defender has spoken openly about how much he enjoyed his time in Chicago, and the Bears have a big need to fill on the side opposite Montez Sweat.
Possible Contract Considerations
Pro Football Focus projects Mack to land a two-year, $45 million deal with $40 million guaranteed and an AAV of $22.5 million.
The Fit
The fit here is a pretty obvious one. The Bears are in desperate need of an EDGE to play on the other side of Montez Sweat, and while Mack isn’t a long-term answer, he’s still playing at a very high level. Mack’s six sacks in 2024 would have led the team, and that sack total would have been significantly higher in all likelihood had he not suffered a hamstring injury that nagged him for most of the year.
Khalil Mack still has yet to win a Super Bowl in his career and undoubtedly would like to play for a contender. Surely, if he were to sign here it would not only be because the Bears can offer him as much money as anyone, but also that he believes that they’re not too far off from winning. Chicago’s defense has been quite good the past two seasons, and last year they fell off only once they started suffering injuries. Adding Mack to the line of scrimmage would give Dennis Allen quite the pass-rushing duo to work with in his first year as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Not only was he outstanding during his first stint here and a fan favorite, but at this stage of his career he still has a lot to give and this wouldn’t just be a nostalgia signing. Unfortunately, Mack’s first run here flamed out after an epic 2018 season, though it wasn’t the fault of the star pass rusher. A reunion with Mack still playing at a high level feels like not only a full-circle moment, but a match that would be a good fit for both sides.
The Bears would be a significantly better team if they’re able to land their former star. He had 31.0 sacks over three seasons in LA, so he’s still producing on the field. In the locker room, he knows what it takes to be a great defender in the NFL and succeed in Chicago as well. If Ryan Poles were able to make this reunion happen on a two-year deal, it would be a home-run signing.
