Everton hand David Moyes greater transfer powers with promise of big investment

Everton are set to make a raft of key appointments before the end of the season – with a possible overhaul of recruitment and more influence for David Moyes part of wider changes as the Friedkin Group (TFG) usher in a new era.

The i Paper understands that a series of announcements from TFG are expected imminently as it looks to finalise a new executive structure capable of supporting its ambitious aim of competing for European qualification as early as next season.

The first signs of what sources believe will be a “transformational” summer have begun to emerge with director of football Kevin Thelwell set to depart when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Thelwell continues to operate with a “business as usual” remit – with no change in his operating role – but he will now not be a driving force in one of the biggest close seasons in recent history at the club.

He is well thought of at Everton and has helped guide the club through one of the rockiest spells in their history but there is an eagerness to move in a new direction, with Moyes set to be given more control over incomings than predecessor Sean Dyche ahead of a summer of unprecedented change in the squad.

As well as a huge number of probable exits – 13 senior players are either out of contract or returning to parent clubs – Everton will benefit from a lower wage bill and a much improved position in regard to the Premier League‘s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) that should allow them to invest “significant” transfer fees in rebuilding their squad.

The recruitment remit is expected to change significantly and it was telling that in January Everton didn’t progress on some of the targets lined up by Thelwell, preferring to keep their powder dry as Moyes assessed his options.

With Everton’s Premier League status looking much more secure, TFG has been able to move onto stage two of the project after a period of consolidation after the takeover in December.

There was an eagerness to “stabilise the ship” after the buyout with all energies focused on preserving Everton’s position in the top flight but the fantastic run of results under Moyes means he has bought plenty of credit and thoughts can now turn to what comes next.

It is understood that Everton are now increasingly confident of appointing Leeds United’s Angus Kinnear as chief executive after a lengthy process led by executive recruitment firm Nolan Partners.

Kinnear is likely to stay at Elland Road until the end of this season but an agreement between Leeds and Everton for an executive who has plenty of respect in the industry is expected to be concluded before then.

It will be a critical role in the new regime at Everton, with the CEO tasked with leading the club into a new era when they move to Bramley-Moore Dock.

TFG’s intention is to use the stadium move to boost commercial revenue significantly while arming Moyes with a much-improved squad for next season to consolidate the work he has done at the training ground.

The Toffees have been operating without a permanent CEO since Denise Barrett-Baxendale departed in 2023 and TFG acknowledged as part of their due diligence that there was a lack of “C-suite” experience at the club.

That will change in the coming weeks, with the executive team set to be bolstered and possible further departures among the senior staff.

The promise of investment on and off the field is a stark contrast to the message of recent years, when Everton were focused solely on survival.

But insiders have sensed TFG is now beginning to “flex their muscles” and there is a genuine sense of optimism at Everton that after a tough period there is renewed ambition at the club.

“I think the players have responded brilliantly well, the crowd have responded brilliantly well,” Moyes said.

“And I can tell everybody else is just beginning to get a feeling back that we could get back to being a really big club again and trying to be successful.”

It was the latest upbeat message from the Scot, who friends say has returned to Everton “re-energised” by the prospect of restoring the club’s former glories.
