The NFL’s offseason transactional period won’t officially begin until March 12 with the start of the new league year. But that isn’t stopping the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders from cutting the first major trade of the offseason.
Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is heading to our nation’s capital:

Deebo Samuel trade news: Star receiver goes to the Commanders
The Deebo Samuel trade news isn’t all that surprising. After all, the Niners just spent a bunch of money last offseason to re-sign Brandon Aiyuk and used the 31st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on wideout Ricky Pearsall. Running back Christian McCaffrey gets looks in the passing game, as does tight end George Kittle. At some point, someone was going to be squeezed out. As it turns out, it is Samuel — who is no stranger to trade rumors.
If you’ll recall, Deebo Samuel made it known he wanted out in April 2022 and requested a trade. Two years later, the Niners dangled Deebo *AND* Brandon Aiyuk in trade talks as they tried moving into the top-10. One year later, Aiyuk appears to be sticking around after signing an extension and Samuel is headed out east. The NFL trade winds can certainly be wild.
Deebo Samuel is a quality player and someone who should be a playmaker in Kliff Kingsbury’s Washington Commanders offense. Samuel is coming off a down year (51 catches, 670 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns) in 2024. However, he is just one season removed from scoring 12 touchdowns and gaining 1,117 scrimmage yards on 97 touches. The Commanders hope Deebo recaptures the magic that made him a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2021. And if he does, Washington’s offense will be one of the best in the league with quarterback Jayden Daniels and clear-cut WR1 Terry McLaurin.
I suppose I’ll close this post out by highlighting that the Commanders are on the Bears’ list of scheduled opponents in 2024. Here’s hoping new defensive play caller Dennis Allen has a plan to contain that explosive attack when those two teams square off later this year.
