Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs Win, Stay Undefeated, Lordy I Wish Spring Counted

The Cubs broke their streak of ties, but they did not break their streak of non-losses. That is to say, they won today, beating the Guardians 7-4. Still undefeated.

Seiya Suzuki played center field today – a clear nod toward the Cubs probably hoping he could be a possible PCA back-up there – and he made the routine plays. Can’t really judge too well on a tiny sample in spring, but he need only be “passable” there to qualify as an option of the bench. No, you wouldn’t expect him to fill in for PCA in center field if there were an injury there, but a one-off? An in-game need? Just a random match-up? Yeah, I could at least imagine it – the Cubs clearly want to know if it’s possible.

Suzuki had a big day at the plate, too, so he must’ve felt comfortable today.

Colin Rea made the start and went three scoreless innings. He continues to ramp up alongside the other sure-thing starting pitchers, and likely will throughout Spring Training.

Brad Keller once again showed off some nasty stuff, but unlike his other appearances this spring, he got hammered when he wasn’t missing bats. Lots of loud contact, including two triples and two homers.

Julian Merryweather was looking GOOD today, striking out two in a clean inning, and getting that fastball velocity up into the upper-90s. Maybe he just needed that knee procedure and offseason reset to get back to the guy he was in 2023. That would be huge for this bullpen. Merryweather has no minor league options remaining, so he either makes the bullpen or gets waived.

Caleb Thielbar also struck out two in his inning of work, and Ryan Brasier threw a 1-2-3 inning. If healthy, those two will definitely be in the Opening Day bullpen.

With both Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan playing in the infield today, it was Berti at third and Brujan at second. Just a for-what-it’s-worth.

Speaking of which, Matt Shaw is expected to get into a game tomorrow, presuming he feels all right after doing some live BP today:
