Former Fresno St. Basketball Player Admits He Played DFS on His Performance

Former Fresno State basketball player Jalen Weaver admitted he played a daily fantasy contest on his point total in a game back in December. The NCAA and Fresno State have been investigating allegations that two men’s basketball players at the university played DFS contests based on their own stats.

Jalen Weaver admitted in a recent interview that he bet $50 on himself to score more than 11 points on December 31, 2024. He talked with ESPN on Thursday about how he made a bad decision.

“I just made a bad decision, and I shouldn’t even have gotten involved with that. Now, I’m obviously paying for it,” he said. “I bet on a game I played in, but I never tried to sabotage the season. I never bet on us to lose, never bet my unders.”

Weaver was shown a text thread by the Fresno State athletic department that showed he had been discussing betting with a teammate. He has since been dismissed from the team and plans to enter the transfer portal when the season ends.

Mykell Robinson Also Removed from Roster

There are other players also caught up in the scandal including junior Mykell Robinson. He also bet and entered daily fantasy contests for games that he was playing in. A major US sportsbook said it received an increased betting interest on props in games involving Robinson this season. Robinson was removed from the Fresno State roster after a January 11 game against Nevada.

    Zaon Collins Being Investigated Too

Unfortunately, it doesn’t end there. Sophomore guard Zaon Collins did not play in last week’s game against Air Force because he has allegedly been betting on professional sports. He remains on the roster but hasn’t been available for comment.

Fresno State is in the midst of an ongoing investigation and has declined to comment. The NCAA is also investigating and isn’t speaking to the media about the situation either. There is an NCAA rule prohibiting athletes from sports betting including fantasy sports.

    Suspicious Betting Activity Clouds NCAA

This isn’t the first time the NCAA has dealt with suspicious betting activity in the past few years. There has been a federal investigation that is looking into gambling rings and their link to college basketball games. There have been suspicious wagers placed against teams like Temple, Eastern Michigan, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T, and Miss. Valley State in the last two seasons.

Athletes who are found to have been part of betting, manipulating games, sharing betting info, and more can end up losing their eligibility permanently.
