The Center Carousel, Raptors Come to Town, Lonzo Ball the Actor, and Other Bulls Bullets

While Nikola Vucevic is expected to sit out again on Friday night, the Chicago Bulls should welcome back Jalen Smith. Will the season-long back-up earn a spot in the starting lineup or will head coach Billy Donovan continue to ride with newbie Zach Collins, who is fresh off a 21-point, 17-rebound night?

If one thing is for sure, I would expect to see the Bulls cycle through these three bigs over their final 23 games. All deserve to be on the floor.

The Chicago Bulls Could Have a Big Problem on Their Hands (Literally) As we discussed earlier this week, Zach Collins’ passing is a skill set the Bulls should be looking to highlight. Not only is it a great way to potentially increase his trade value ahead of the offseason, but I also think it’s the kind of tool that can help the team’s other youngsters build confidence. We have seen an increased willingness to find cutting lanes and move decisively off the ball over the last couple of weeks. You want players to be rewarded for this extra effort with easy buckets, and Collins’ passing ability from the middle of the floor can be a big part of making that happen. This feels particularly important for players like Dalen Terry and Julian Phillips, who are still finding their way. Both have struggled a lot offensively at times, but they each possess the kind of athleticism and length to be strong slashers. It’s hard for them to see the value in that, however, if they don’t have someone who can set them up. Maybe Collins can be that someone? Speaking of length and athleticism, the Bulls play a squad with plenty of that on Friday night. The Toronto Raptors come into the United Center 5.0 games behind the Bulls in the Eastern Conference’s 13th slot. Some have crossed their fingers that the Raptors could be a dark horse to make a run at the No. 10 seed, but this sure feels like a lot to ask of the organization with less than a month and a half to go. Likewise, the Bulls have already beaten them twice this season. © Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images In their last meeting on Jan. 31, the Bulls’ bench made a significant difference. They outscored Toronto’s second unit a staggering 50-32. While there is no denying that the Raptors have a slew of intriguing young prospects, their depth has caused them some major problems at times. And I wouldn’t be shocked to see that serve as the difference again tonight. Whether it be Kevin Huerter, Tre Jones, or the returning Jalen Smith, the Bulls have a clear upper hand when it comes to scoring off the bench. Jones scored 16 points on 7-9 shooting against the Clippers, while Huerter now has three straight games in double figures. Another key difference-maker tonight could be the three-point line. While the Bulls have shot slightly less in recent weeks, this is still a group that has stat Top 3 in the NBA in attempts per game since the beginning of the season. Meanwhile, the Raptors currently rank 29th in average attempts. We saw this become a factor in their last battle, where Chicago went 18-40 from downtown while Toronto managed just an 8-30 performance. Even if the Bulls aren’t shooting the ball particularly well, they could stick around in this one simply because of the stark difference in shot profile. For what it’s worth, Scottie Barnes is currently listed as “questionable” on the latest injury report with a hip contusion. The forward has been banged up plenty of times this season, so this Raptors team is plenty used to suiting up without him. Still, no Barnes would make life a lot easier on an undersized Bulls team. twitter.com/chicagobulls/status/1895458935420690561 Lonzo Ball has picked up a new side gig! The 27-year-old made an appearance in a new ad for the film “Mickey 17,” which will hit theaters in March. I have to be honest, he did a pretty decent acting job! Ball hasn’t necessarily been known for his outgoing personality over the years, but I feel like we have seen him crawl more of his shell since returning from injury. I’ve especially thought he’s been more animated on the court, which I think speaks to how genuinely grateful he is to be playing basketball again.

Got a new gig!! ? See what the expendable life is like in @mickey17movie only in theaters March 7th! #ad t.co/Yw2GuOCgq2 pic.twitter.com/IC0bQPy3NG

    — Lonzo Ball (@ZO2_) February 27, 2025 A lot of BN loyalists have asked for this for a long time, so I know Brett & Michael were thrilled to announce it: The Bleacher Nation Cubs Podcast is here! A big shoutout to Ankin Law, who helped make this finally happen. You can subscribe and listen to the first episode practically anywhere you get your podcasts. I’m planning to do a little minor league coverage this offseason to spice up my work life, so perhaps you’ll hear my annoying voice on there in the near future. We all know the Bulls’ deadline didn’t satisfy our trade hunger, so I recommend keeping up to date with all the Blackhawks drama. Lots of rumors floating around right now. Matt took a look at a possible option for the Bears’ offensive line. I’ll be happy with any help they can get!
