Yesterday I collected some of the league-wide intel on Seth Jones‘ trade market, which is going to continue to be a prominent topic in Chicago. But he isn’t the only Blackhawks player whose name if floating around the rumor mill right now.
Before we get into some comments about specific players, on Thursday morning Greg Wyshynski at ESPN.com put together a massive list of trade targets and placed them into groups. He lists Pat Maroon in his “Help up front tier” tier but does not comment on him specifically.
Connor Murphy
In my updated look at the Seth Jones trade market yesterday I opened with comments from Dom Luszczyszyn at The Athletic when he analyzed the top defensemen who could be available before March 7. He also included Connor Murphy in his consideration set, and had some very good things to say about the veteran. Here’s part of those comments:His projected Defensive Rating of plus-3.0 is the best on the board and stems from an ability to suppress chances throughout his career. Every season, Murphy’s teams have allowed fewer chances with him on the ice compared to off. This season’s 0.29 fewer expected goals against per 60 is close to a career best.
Murphy doesn’t play shutdown minutes and his puck skills aren’t the best — offensively, he won’t bring much to the table. But he looks like the best bet out there for a team that needs a defensive stopper on its second pair.
Here’s what Wyshynski wrote about Murphy:For the Blackhawks, keeping Murphy around might make more sense than dealing him now, especially because his $4.4 million cap hit and expiring contract status make him more attractive to other teams in 2025-26.
Ryan Donato
From ESPN:Donato ($2 million AAV) is having himself a contract year, setting a career high of 19 goals in 56 games for the Blackhawks. This should be a win for GM Kyle Davidson, who signed him as a free agent and should get a decent pick for him at the deadline.
From NHL.com on Wednesday:Donato would be an attractive option for a team looking to upgrade their top six forwards. The 28-year-old is in the last of a two-year contract with a $2 million AAV and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. He has had double-digit goals each of the past four seasons.
Alec Martinez
From ESPN:As for Martinez, he’s a three-time Stanley Cup champion who would be ideal for a contender. But The Athletic reports that both he and forward Pat Maroon probably will be traded only if they sign off on a move.
