Folks, I usually try to give you a little bit of a rundown of how a Blackhawks game progresses before getting into our three stars. Here is your first period recap:

Making matters worse, Nick Foligno did not return after the first period. And Arvid Söderblom replaced Petr Mrázek to start the second period. But… then a funny thing happened. The Blackhawks’ first two shots of the second period went in — off the sticks of two of the young guys who are part of the future — and things were suddenly at least a little interesting for a bit. Vegas was able to put a sixth goal on the board before the end of the period but the Blackhawks responded with a much, much better 20 minutes.
When the Blackhawks scored twice in the first half of the third period to make it a one-goal game, things got very interesting. But they couldn’t come all the way back and lost. Again.
Star 1: Frank Nazar
With Foligno out of the lineup after the first period, other skaters needed to pick up the slack in the faceoff circle (where the Blackhawks are still a work-in-progress without Jason Dickinson). Nazar was really good again tonight and did a nice job at the dot. He had the primary assist on the goals from Colton Dach and Ilya Mikheyev for his third multi-point game of the season (and first multi-assist game of his career). He put two shots on net and won 8 of 16 faceoffs in 16:57.

Murphy had three assist in the game and really stepped up his physical presence on the ice in the second and third periods. He was on the ice for all five of the Blackhawks’ goals.
Star 3: Ethan Del Mastro
If you score your first career NHL goal, you get to be one of our stars of the night. I have really liked what I’ve seen from Del Mastro since he was recalled (and actually got to dress). For the second straight game he got some run on the top pair as well. Del Mastro was credited with two shots on net, two hits, one blocked shot and one takeaway in 18:22 (only one second of which came on special teams).

The Blackhawks have asked young players to consistently do specific things to earn ice time. In the case of Dach, they want him to be physical and use his size. If you watch him score the Blackhawks’ second goal of the game, you see all of it. A big hit behind the net, gets his tail to the front of the net and tips it home. In the first two periods, Dach was credited with a team-high five hits in 9:02.#Blackhawks score a second goal ? Colton Dach? Frank Nazar, Tyler Bertuzzi pic.twitter.com/0S4A6crS7F
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) February 28, 2025 Foligno scored a goal in the first period that tied the game at one. Of course Vegas out-scored the Blackhawks 4-0 in the final 13 minutes of the period, but there was a whiff of something nice for a second when the captain made this play. Foligno had a team-high two shots on net and won 5 of 8 faceoffs before his night ended prematurely.#Blackhawks tie the game! ? Nick Foligno? Alex Vlasic, Teuvo Teravainen pic.twitter.com/H5GyXWzNnc
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) February 28, 2025 The Blackhawks put TJ Brodie back in the lineup tonight. His first shift: fumbled the puck, turned it over twice and Vegas took a 1-0 lead only 66 seconds into the game. Immediately off the faceoff following Vegas’ third goal, Brodie got burned and took a bad penalty and it was time for the bourbon. Seth Jones was on the ice for three of Vegas’ five goals in the first period. Vegas’ seventh goal redirected into the Blackhawks’ net off Jones’ skate. Not a great night for the ol’ trade value. The Blackhawks’ road penalty kill has been exceptional this year. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen pointed at the team taking five penalties in Utah as a big reason they lost. So… the Blackhawks took three penalties… and allowed two goals in the first period. The Blackhawks hadn’t allowed five goals in a first period since 2018. We can update that fun fact.xx
