There’s nothing more frustrating than biting into a burrito you painstakingly prepared and—uh oh—it falls apart quicker than your last situationship. How is it that a seemingly simple dish is a source of stress for so many at-home chefs? A major reason why your burrito fails is the type of tortilla you’re using. Not only do you need a tortilla that’s an adequate size, you’ll also want to make sure you’re working with a warm tortilla.
Luckily, it’s not too late to step up your burrito-making game. In a super helpful video, YouTube creator Internet Shaquille offered a quick rundown on how you can make the best and easiest homemade burritos. And it turns out that the trick to mastering this cheesy favorite has a lot to do with preparation.

As tempting as it might be, you don’t want to roll up your burrito with filling before heating it up. Because it turns out that a warm tortilla is vital in making a burrito that won’t break on you mid-bite. When your tortilla is warm, it’s pliable and much easier to work with.
But before you even begin to warm up your tortilla, you’re going to want to make sure you have the right tortilla. According to Internet Shaquille, the perfect tortilla is made of flour, it’s fatty and it's thin. The flour helps to provide stretch, the fat provides pliability and the thinness ensures the tortillas are more flexible (for more filling!) Additionally, you’ll want to buy “the biggest tortillas you can find.”
“You have to warm up your tortilla before you fill it. Cold saturated fat is typically rigid, so warm it up slowly over medium heat," Internet Shaquille revealed. "If you take it too far or too hot, you’ll crisp it up and you’re back in breakable territory.”

Seal with Some Cheese
When preparing your tortilla, you’ll want to warm it on one side and then flip it over to warm the other side. Once you’ve flipped your tortilla, this is when you’ll want to add your shredded cheese. Not only does this method allow for even cheese distribution, the melted cheese also serves as an indicator of when your tortilla is ready. Once your tortilla is ready, it’s then time to fill your burrito.
“Place your fillings in a stubby line, fold both sides in and then fold the bottom up as tight as you can. And when I say tight, I mean really take this bottom edge and tuck it underneath the fillings,” the YouTuber explained.

Lastly, to ensure that your burrito is spill proof, seal it shut by searing the seam when you’re warming up your burrito in a pan. Once the burrito is sealed, you can use your pan to heat each side until it’s toasted to a golden-brown color.
