Abdul Carter’s Combine Tests Reveal Foot Injury That Might Require Surgery

As the vast majority of this year’s NFL Draft Class arrived in Indianapolis for the combine this week, we got some surprising news regarding this year’s potential first overall pick, Abdul Carter.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the star EDGE out of Penn State had his medical tests reveal a stress reaction in his right foot. According to Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, surgery is indeed one of the options available for the star pass rusher and that decision will be made in the “near future.” The other option would be to skip surgery altogether and test at a pro day to essentially prove he’s alright without it.

Option 1 for Abdul Carter would be to have the pre-emptive surgery, have a screw inserted in his right foot, and be expected back in eight weeks, Rosenhaus said.Option 2 for Carter would be to bypass the surgery, conduct his pro day and prove to NFL teams that he doesn’t need… t.co/83PXLtZw0f

What Does Abdul Carter’s Stress Reaction Mean For His Draft Stock?

I’ve seen players be diagnosed with stress reactions before, but I wasn’t 100 percent sure what exactly the injury entailed. Essentially, a bone stress reaction is when bone tissue swells or becomes inflamed after overuse. While stress reactions don’t usually require a lengthy recovery, they can be somewhat problematic because they can often lead to stress fractures, which can be a problem.

For Bears fans getting a slight glimmer of hope that maybe, somehow, Abdul Carter might slip to the 10th overall selection due to this injury, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Even if Carter does choose to opt for surgery (which I would think he should), the recovery time is expected to be about 8 weeks. So that would get us to about the end of April or beginning of May. If that’s the case, sure he’d miss some offseason workouts and such, but he would be healthy and ready to go well before training camp.

Carter has such a high ceiling. He was outstanding all year, and when the College Football Playoff rolled around it felt like he took his game to the next level. Clearly, I’m not a doctor. However, if opting for rehab instead of surgery really comes with any sort of increased risk of further injuring his foot or letting this issue linger, it just doesn’t seem worth it.

The standout EDGE has a legitimate shot to be the first overall pick. Sure, we’ve seen a lot less cause players to fall down draft boards. But with the lack of long-term concern over this issue, it makes it seem like his chances of falling very far quite slim. Having said that, if the first nine teams selecting in April’s draft decided to pass on Abdul Carter as to not risk anything, you wouldn’t hear me complain!

But seriously, for as annoying as this injury reveal must have been for Abdul Carter and his family, at this point it just feels like a very minor setback and it doesn’t seem like anything that will affect his timeline of being ready for training camp and his rookie season. I’m sure we’ll get an announcement soon enough on what route he decides to take. At this point, his draft stock seems high enough and his tape speaks for itself enough that trying to play through it seems like an unnecessary risk. However, that’s for him, his family, and his agent to decide.

I joked earlier about Carter potentially falling to the Bears at 10th overall, but let’s be real, the chances of that happening are highly unlikely. Even if this injury were to cause the Titans to opt for a different route at first overall, it would be very difficult to see Carter drop past the Patriots at fourth or Jaguars at fifth. Even if he did get by them, provided there were no further complications with that foot injury, it would still probably require a trade-up for Ryan Poles to land him.

But while this likely doesn’t end with Chicago landing Carter, it could end up impacting them. If Carter were to fall, it most certainly could cause a trickle-down effect. He still will almost certainly be the first EDGE off the board, but if he ends up being available at fifth overall and Jacksonville goes with him, maybe that means someone like Mason Graham (who is very live for the Jags at #5) falls a bit. Maybe it means the Bears will have the chance to take the second EDGE off the board instead of the third.

It’s tough to speculate how this might affect the draft, and honestly, with just about two months still remaining until draft night, there’s still so much that can change. As of right now, this feels like something that won’t really affect Abdul Carter all that much, outside of maybe dropping to fourth or fifth instead of potentially going first. But Bears fans, probably don’t get your hopes up for a Montez Sweat/Abdul Carter EDGE tandem next year.
