"Anyone, but especially those with dry skin, should look for a concealer that's formulated with nourishing and hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides and niacinamide," explains celebrity dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, FAAD, whose clients include Sofia Vergara, Elle Macpherson and Kristin Chenoweth.
Although both liquid and cream formulas can be suitable for dry skin, board-certified dermatologist Harold Lancer, MD, FAAD notes liquids usually provide more hydration because they contain higher amounts of water and skincare ingredients, versus creams which can be a bit thicker and opaque.
Whether you go with liquid or cream, Miami dermatologist to the stars, S. Manjula Jegasothy, MD, FAAD, says to look for concealer formulations that have silica or silicates in them. "They tend to remain on the surface of the skin, filling in microscopic hills and valleys, thus creating a smoother surface that allows light to reflect off the area," she explains. These tiny particles are responsible for creating "skin luminosity," which Dr. Jegasothy credits with enhancing the results of the concealer much better than the color improvement itself.Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. How Should You Apply Concealer if You Have Dry Skin?
Dr. Engleman says layers of hydration are key for improving the finish and wear of concealer if you have dry skin."Start by gently cleansing the skin with a hydrating, non-stripping cleanser, then pat off most of the water but leave the skin a bit damp to lock in more hydration," she advises. Next, layer on a hydrating serum, moisturizer and nourishing sunscreen, followed by your concealer and any other makeup you wish on top. If you happen to be in a dry climate with dry skin to boot, Dr. Jegasothy's hack for preventing caking is to mix equal parts moisturizer and concealer, then apply. "You can refresh as necessary, but always with both moisturizer and concealer in the same area to eliminate dry skin-related creasing," she explains.Related: 10 Best Under Eye Concealers for Mature Skin, According to Skincare Experts
