Taillon Velo Looking Good, Tucker and Smith, Brewers Injury, Jerseys, and Other Cubs Bullets

I love donuts so much, and there’s this new donut place roughly in our area that I’m checking out today. On the one hand, I want it to be awesome, because I don’t really have a great donut place around me. On the other hand, if these donuts are awesome, I might really be in trouble because I CAN NOT CONTROL MYSELF around good donuts ….

Shōta Imanaga will make his first Cactus League start today, though he’s been throwing simulated games already. It’s crazy that he’s just three weeks away from his season opening start in Japan. Jameson Taillon has talked about wanting to goose his velocity a bit this year after it fell over the last couple seasons, and it was sitting at about 92 mph in his first start yesterday, per the Tribune. He was at 92.5 mph on average last year, so if he ramps up a bit from here, he may succeed in having boosted his velo. “I just think (velocity) can make your life a little easier,” Taillon said. “I can still get outs at any velocity I think, but having a little extra in the tank could be what it takes to get something by a guy or make a swing decision a little tougher, make them have to get their swing started a little earlier, and that can make your offspeed even better. So it can affect a lot, but really it just makes your life a little easier.” Taillon tweaked some smaller things this offseason in his training regimen, and also is in a better place with his back (remember that injury last year in the spring? it impacted him throughout the year). He doesn’t need to be a flamethrower to have success, as we saw last year, but he’s not wrong that if he could get back to that 94 mph range (without sacrificing command), there’s just more margin for error. Kyle Tucker knows himself very well, and his new teammates are getting to know him, too (Sun-Times). He is a guy who just knows what he wants to do at the plate so completely and executes at such a high level. Hopefully that confidence rubs off on his new teammates. Speaking of Tucker, boy I sure hope he’s truly incredible this year for the Cubs, because gulp:

    — Ben Verlander (@BenVerlander) February 25, 2025 The Brewers have lost pitcher JB Bukauskas for the year, after he suffered a serious lat injury that requires surgery. The 28-year-old righty reliever had been excellent for the Brewers in a tiny sample the last two seasons, and was excellent at Triple-A when healthy those two years, too. All of which is to say, if he’d stayed health, Bukauskas may have contributed meaningfully to the Brewers this year. Speaking of which, the Brewers’ relief group has quietly lost a lot of its biggest contributors from last year, with Devin Williams being the most visible. But they also lost Hoby Milner, Joe Ross, Colin Rea, Enoli Paredes, and Jakob Junis (and Abner Uribe and D.L. Hall are currently injured, though expected back early in the year). That’s almost 200 innings worth of relief pitching that got exceptional results in the aggregate in 2024 that the Brewers have to replace. I know that’s part of all bullpens, and turnover has been their model, but it’s not as if they’ve gone out and added meaningfully. You could convince me that the Brewers’ offense and defense might be very good this year, but the pitching looks much more sketchy to me. They will have to outperform on that side once again to do their 90-win thing. The Cubs are one of the most improved teams: When you see it like this, you can really tell how bad those jerseys were:
