Angel Reese is making history as a WNBA star.

The 22-year-old is the first basketball star to be apart of The Met Gala committee after she beat her peers like Caitlin Clark to the role.

The annual fashion event aims to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and celebrities form part of a committee whose job it is to ensure the objectives are met.

Reese has rocketed to fame in the last 18 months after her initial breakthrough in April 2023 when she won the NCAA championship after beating Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the March Madness showpiece.

Reese and Clark have both enjoyed immense success off the court.

Indiana Fever star Clark was recently selected as TIME’s Athlete of the Year while Chicago Sky forward Reese was featured on the cover of Vogue last month.

However, it’s Reese who gets the nod for the prestigious role as a committee member at the world’s biggest fashion event.

The WNBA star will join Olympic track star Sha’Carri Richardson and seven-time gold-medalist Simon Biles on the celeb-filled panel.

Meanwhile, NBA great LeBron James takes the role as honorary chair, and is joined by Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton as one of the four co-chairs.

The announcement marks the return of the host committee tradition, which was binned for the last few years, but is back for the 2025 edition.

The Gala, which will be held on May 5, follows a theme of ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’.

“The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition will present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world,” according to the Met.

The cost of attending the biggest fashion event of the year is set to reach new highs, with reports suggesting a solo ticket costs $75,000, while a table is yours for $275,000.

Each year, the Gala tends to keep its official guest list under wraps, allowing for surprises each time when the celebrities walk the red carpet.

With athletes dominating the committee, we can expect to see even more of the world’s biggest sports star at the event.

Other sports figures in the past have appeared at the Met Gala with Serena Williams, Dwyane Wade, and Ben Simmons all spotted on the red carpet in the past.

The photos taken of the celebrities walking up the staircase leading into the museum in elaborate outfits often go viral with some wild designs taking center stage in the past.

The fashion and fundraising event consistently brings in eight-figure sums for the institute with large donations from the celebrities attending.

In 2024, the Met Gala hauled in a record sum of more than $26 million. Reese, James, Hamilton, and other stars will now be tasked with breaking that record again this year.
