DRIVERS complaining of paint flying off their cars have finally received a response from the automaker.
That includes Armando Toosi from Angus, Ontario who says his white 2015 Hyundai Sonata was under a decade old when it started to lose its finish.
Armando bought his car in 2016 but said the bizarre ordeal began after he took his treasured vehicle to a car wash.
He told CBC: “Paint just started flying off the car.”
Armando claimed the problem is not just unique to his car either, adding his mom’s vehicle, which is the exact same model as his, has experienced something similar.
The car manufacturer issued a statement calling these problems “extremely rare”.
Hyundai Canada’s warranty program states paint is only covered for three years – the equivalent of 60,000km.
But since numerous reports of peeling paint, the car manufacturer is offering a white paint warranty extension for certain 2017 and 2018 models.
These include the Elantra, Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles.
However, for car owners like Armando whose vehicles aren’t covered in this warranty extension, the problem remains.
Hyundai insists the issue of peeling white paint is industry-wide and drivers should contact their local dealership or the manufacturer’s customer care if they have concerns.
But according to Armando, “no one wants to take ownership” as neither customer support or his local dealership helped with a solution.
He’s not the only one who’s suffering the less-than-appealing situation either, as thousands of members are part of a Hyundai peeling paint group on Facebook – all suffering a similar issue.
Judging by the posts inside the group, this is something happening to multiple Hyundai owners across many different models.
And although all paint colors appear to be affected, white cars seem to be the most problematic.
Another Hyundai driver, Pamela Rainey, shared a picture of her car, and wrote: “It has been garaged since 2020.
“Came out of work to see this. I thought I was vandalized until I read about the paint issues Hyundai is having.”
“I spent $48,000 and at 50,000 miles, my paint started peeling,” said another woman, who shared her story on TikTok.
Meanwhile, earlier this year Carrie Francom from Atlanta, Georgia, claimed her white 2019 Hyundai Sonata had just 10,000 miles on the clock when it started to lose its finish.
Speaking to Channel 2 Action News, she said: “When it rains, it will just start coming off.
“I can’t even wash it now because if I try to wash it, more paint comes off of it.”
Francom says the bizarre ordeal began when she was staying at a hotel, leading her to think someone had scratched or scraped her car.
She added: “It’s embarrassing. I don’t like driving around like this. It looks like a Dalmatianlate-model.”
This comes as a proposed class action lawsuit about the peeling paint was filed in federal court in New York earlier this year.
Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray even reached out to Hyundai, who replied with a statement: “A manufacturing issue with the paint on Hyundai vehicles is extremely rare and has only occurred in isolated incidents.
“Owners experiencing paint issues are advised to visit their local dealership or contact the Hyundai Customer Care Center.”
Hyundai has been approached for comment.
