The San Diego City Council Tuesday passed an ordinance requiring operators of live events to ensure workers at city-owned facilities and parks have completed standardized safety training.
Councilman Raul Campillo wrote the ordinance, which takes effect July 1, 2025. It requires event workers doing advanced work, such as setting up stages and operating powered equipment, undergo safety training, complete OSHA courses and obtain industry certifications.
“All workers deserve to know that they will come home safe and sound after finishing their shift,” Campillo said. “By requiring common-sense training, we can prevent many injuries on the job for live event workers in San Diego.”
It applies to events at city-owned venues such as Petco Park, Pechanga Arena, the San Diego Convention Center and Civic Theatre, as well as all city parks.
“Too many live event workers have suffered injuries and accidents due to a lack of universal safety standards,” said Fernanda Flores, political director of IATSE Local 122. “The ordinance passed by the San Diego City Council today prioritizes the health and safety of live event workers in our city.”
Similar safety regulations are in place for state- and county-owned facilities, but the ordinance is being touted as the first of its type to be adopted by a city in California.
